Where to buy strings?

Where to buy strings?

I’m looking for an online dealer with decent prices on Helicores and Dominants. I placed an order at gostrings.com and have had a terrible experience with them that I do not want to repeat. Who has worked for you?

Thanks,

Re: Where to buy strings?

I’ve had good luck on eBay with some of the buyitnow auctions. This far it’s the cheapest way for me to get Evah Pirazzis.

Re: Where to buy strings?

If you’re in the states I would definitely recommend Johnson Strings. I buy almost exclusively from them. Their string prices are consistently the lowest that I’ve found, with the bonus that they have sales in January (15% orders over $100 or $150) and May (10% off orders over $50). I generally buy my strings for the year then. Strings-only orders over $40 get free shipping. They also have very useful pages describing the general tonal qualities of all of the strings that they carry (recognising that each fiddle will respond differently to them).

ps—I have no financial interest in JohnsonString—just a very satisfied repeat customer.

Re: Where to buy strings?

Bad experience with gostrings.com? Interesting, I had a fine experience with them. A bit slow to ship, but oh well. One of the strings they sent me had a broken core (manufacturing problem). I contacted them about it and they were fairly prompt in dealing with the problem.

Re: Where to buy strings?

I’ve been using elderly for many years and never had any problems, but I’m not sure if they stock the brands you want.

Re: Where to buy strings?

I get mine from Maison Tasset now.

They often have promotions, and are reliable, quick and helpful.

Re: Where to buy strings?

If you’re only purchasing strings, Shar will ship for free.

Re: Where to buy strings?

I second southwest above. Great service, fast delivery, I don’t think they charge shipping on strings only mailed in the US, unless things have changed. I’ve bought all sorts of accessories from them.

Re: Where to buy strings?

If you’re in the UK/EU try http://www.thestringzone.co.uk. Reliable, very quick, attractive prices, and a very large range of stock, including specialist strings such as Baroque. Not only strings, but bows, rosin, shoulder rests, chin rests, etc.

I’ve looked at another well-known online retailer (reputedly the World’s largest if you’re looking for books, audio/video recordings, electrical equipment, and so on) but wasn’t all that impressed with what they had on offer for fiddle strings and bows. Ok perhaps for well-knowns such as Dominant and Helicore, but there seemed to be a number of very inexpensive brands I didn’t recognize. I’d be wary, on the general principle that you usually get what you pay for, and I can’t help but feel suspicious when low-range stuff is described as "Professional".

Go straight to Shar !

I’ve also had a good experience with Elderly Instruments in Michigan in the U.S., particularly for fretted instrument needs. For fiddle strings, I usually buy from Quinn Violins in Minnesota. The string section for their website is http://www.quinnviolins.com/qv_violinstrings_main.shtml. They do mail order.

Re: Where to buy strings?

I asked a question then left on a trip. Rude, I know, but I’m happy to see all your replies. Time to get shopping.
