What type of whistle does Sharon Shannon play?

Re: What type of whistle does Sharon Shannon play?

Many of the wood whistles currently being made look very similar in design, so it’s difficult to tell.

However, it looks much like a scaled down version of a Grinter low whistle, so my guess is that Michael Grinter made it. The tuning slide looks like the ones he uses on his whistles.

Re: What type of whistle does Sharon Shannon play?

Could be a Chris Abell.
Another Flute/whistle maker, George Ormiston, also produces fine whistles that look similar to the one Sharon is playing.

Re: What type of whistle does Sharon Shannon play?

It doesn’t look like Abell whistle for me. Chris usually makes silver mouthpiece and here’s the wooden one. I would agree about Grinter

Re: What type of whistle does Sharon Shannon play?

And what are the tunes that she’s playing in these 2 videos?

Re: What type of whistle does Sharon Shannon play?

1st video = "Rathlin Island" / "Sporting Paddy"

2nd video = Can’t put a name to the 1st jig, but the first part certainly sounds familiar / 2nd is "Willie Coleman’s".

Yeah, the second video is clearer - agree it’s not an Abell. Could be well a Grinter but they have silver mouthpieces too (certainly the ones I’ve seen have).

Re: What type of whistle does Sharon Shannon play?

I am sure that it’s Michael Grinter.
