Strathspeys on the fiddle…?

Strathspeys on the fiddle…?

Hi, I’m learning some fab strathspeys at present & would be grateful for any advice.

Firstly, do you have any tips regarding bowing or other techniques to give these tunes extra oomph?

And secondly, is there a fiddler out there who plays strathspeys particularly well, who could inspire me, and be a model to imitate?

This is an Irish site, granted, but they play strathspeys in Donegal, and I know there are some good Scottish fiddlers out there. Thanks for any replies. Live long & prosper. πŸ™‚

Re: Strathspeys on the fiddle…?

They call them "Highlands" in Donegal, I believe, and they’re played slightly faster and a bit snappier. At least that’s what I recall it says on the covers of Altan albums. There ends my knowledge of this and even that is up for debate.

Brilliant! Thank you, Danny, Alistair & David. πŸ™‚

Re: Strathspeys on the fiddle…?

bow nice and close to the heel for a crunchier sound (usually that’s for Cape Breton SSs but it works well enough on Scots ones too)

Re: Strathspeys on the fiddle…?

I am fond of Aly Bain, Alisdair Fraser and John McCusker, all Scots who know how to snap. And you can do worse than listen to the strathspeys, the way the Cape Breton fiddlers play them, people from families like the McMasters, Rankins, MacIssacs, the late Jerry Holland, etc, etc.

Re: Strathspeys on the fiddle…?

Thanks again for the helpful advice & I’ll take a look at all these links.
Peace & long life. πŸ™‚

Re: Strathspeys on the fiddle…?

I’d like to thank Jim Dorans for taking the trouble to make and post me a video on basic bowing technique for the strathspey. How fabulous is that! πŸ™‚
But it’s a great site - thank you to all the others who’ve pm-ed me with help since I joined late last year.

Jim’s video is making me think about things like my bow pressure and how to achieve a really *crackling* snap. I really hope I get a chance to attend one of his fiddling workshops - maybe next year, as I have family pressures at present.

Jim, I always find your posts insightful & practical, and I *love* your sense of humour. (Having a Scottish father and a Scottish husband may just have something to do with that. πŸ™‚)

Re: Strathspeys on the fiddle…?

Careful there Mollie, Jim may seem nice and helpful but he’ll soon have you playing trazz and participating in other unanatural acts! Don’t say you weren’t warned…

Re: Strathspeys on the fiddle…?

What do you mean ‘seem’? Jim *is* nice and helpful!
But please, feel free to spend hours making me a fiddling-video whenever you wish… πŸ™‚
Have a great week, Cheeky Elf, and Love, Joy, Peace to everyone else on The Session.
