Name of Tune

Name of Tune

Can anybody help with the name of the jig (or slide?) that follows the song "The Wind and Rain" on Altan’s "Local Ground"?

Re: Name of Tune

Don’t know it, but there are definite similarities to "Seamus’s / Jimmy Ward’s" in it, and the second part starts with what sounds like a piece of "The Swaggering Jig".

Re: Name of Tune

It’s the tune of the song, played faster and without words.

Re: Name of Tune

Thanks Kenny and bc_box_player - the second part definitely sounds like "The Swaggering Jig". Playing along, I also thought there’s a very "songish" feel to it, though the melody doesn’t seem to be quite the same. Nice tune, with or without name!

Re: Name of Tune

I’m not 100% certain but I think I can guess. The tune is not recorded anywhere else as far as I know, and Kenny doesn’t know it, so it’s likely that it’s a new composition. The FAA AdB|AFE D Swaggering Jig bit reminds me of the Road to Durham https://thesession.org/tunes/1677 which appeared on Altan’s Horse with a Heart and which may have served as inspiration for a new Altan composition. Overall, the tune has echoes of Roaring Waters https://thesession.org/tunes/768 off their Blue Idol recording, which makes me think your tune might be another Ciaran Tourish / Mark Kelly composition. It certainly has the hallmarks of one - especially the bit that goes ~g3 fed|fee e2g transposed becomes ~c3 BAG|BAA A2c… which is almost exactly the same as the last bar of the 2nd part of Roaring Water cdc BAG|BAA A2G…

I think it was most likely written in Dmix/Gmaj and then transposed up when it was found that it went better that way after the song, probably at the suggestion of the bouzouki player, who would already be capoed on the 7th fret.

I’m also guessing that they haven’t named the tune on the album because they gave it the same name as the song (a naturalistic one like Roaring Water!)

In fact I’d go so far as to put money on it as a Tourish/Kelly collaboration. They are here in Sydney in 2 weeks’ time on tour so perhaps I’ll get a chance to ask. At any rate I’ve posted it in the tunes section under the song title here https://thesession.org/tunes/13398 until we have more info.

Re: Name of Tune

Thanks a lot for all these details, I agree, it very much looks like a new composition. I’ve been trying ABCs in all sorts of keys but no database will show anything near it. Dmix/Gmaj goes well on the fiddle, and so does Emix/A-maj. I will add this version in the tunes section. Would be great if you could get an answer regarding the title right at the source, though "The Wind and Rain"-Jig seems appropriate enough.
