Re: Allan’s ‘Irish Fiddler’

What’s mysterious about it?

Re: Allan’s ‘Irish Fiddler’

From the site:

"The origins of the collection are something of a mystery. Its first date of publication is not now known…Although the book has been extensively used for decades, very few libraries hold copies…The identity of Hugh McDermott is likewise now a mystery. Was he an Irishman living in Scotland, or a Scot of Irish ancestry?…"

Re: Allan’s ‘Irish Fiddler’

Ha! I bought a hardcopy of that tunebook more than 40 years ago - it’s now rather tatty and dog-eared …

… but I guess that I won’t be needing it any more … ;-)

Re: Allan’s ‘Irish Fiddler’

I heard the collection was started in the 1930s.

Re: Allan’s ‘Irish Fiddler’

Where did you hear that, Fiddler3?

Re: Allan’s ‘Irish Fiddler’

Given Donegal versions for many of the tunes (Pigeon on the Gate, Molly’s Favourite, etc.), Hugh McDermott was assumed to be Donegal man living in Glasgow (which has been called the capital of Donegal).

Re: Allan’s ‘Irish Fiddler’ the PDF

Here’s "The Irish Fiddler" in more useful PDF form (as the 2-volume version "The Irish Pianist", not for the dreadful vamping accompaniment but because the text of the tunes is bigger and so easier to use).
You can download it here:
