What do you think are the happiest tunes?

What do you think are the happiest tunes?

Personal favorites are Calliope House, The Lisnagun Jig and Maids of Selma.

Also most things Flook plays, but particularly Road to Errogie, Larry Get Out of the Bin and Trip to Herve’s, as well as Brian Finnegan’s Castlerock Road.

What are some of your favorite happy/spirit-lifting tunes?

Re: What do you think are the happiest tunes?

Oh no no no no no no no no no please no. Please Gawd no.
I’ve grown to loathe the Kesh jig ever since a certain member of our folk group used it as the dreary backdrop to a song called Lazy Mary…
EVERY BL&&DY CONCERT she digs it out and tries to get the audience to sing along… even to the extent of having a group of dancers enact the actions… and so sincerest apologies to Sebastian but after enduring it for years now I’ll hear that tune on my deathbed, and it’ll finish me off.
However for happy-sounding tunes I love the tuneful optimism of Merrily Kissed the Quaker, the Irish Washerwoman or Father O’Flynn.

Re: What do you think are the happiest tunes?

Anything in the key of G.

I really love The Mossy Banks.

Re: What do you think are the happiest tunes?

Red-haired Boy and Drowsy Maggie.

Re: What do you think are the happiest tunes?

I agree with Calliope House. Also The Spotted Dog and other A maj jigs.

Re: What do you think are the happiest tunes?

The bucks of Orenmore, the version that matt molloy plays, beautiful 🙂
I also really like rolling in the Ryegrass and the Snowy path.

Re: What do you think are the happiest tunes?

The High Drive (Gordon Duncan), Jenny Dang The Weaver, and Misses MacLeod’s

Re: What do you think are the happiest tunes?

Most tunes by Josephine Marsh.

Re: What do you think are the happiest tunes?

trip to herves, hole in the wall, slide from grace, green mountain reel, there’s so many.

Re: What do you think are the happiest tunes?

Out on the Ocean.

Re: What do you think are the happiest tunes?

Polkas and Slip-Jigs have some pretty happy melodies.

Britches Full of Stiches
Bill Sullivans
Jim Keefe’s
Polkas on a Jackie Daly album

Dusty Miller
Con’s Slip Jig
Slip Jigs from Altan albums

For reels:

London Lasses
Galway Rambler
Duke of Leinster
Silver Spear
Red-Haired Girl
Steeplechase
Trip to Durrow
Foxhunter’s

For jigs:

The Flying Crowbar
The Clare Shout
The Eavesdropper
Frost is All Over
Kitty Lie Over
The Roaring Barmaid
Laoise Kelly’s
The Humours of Glin
Out on the Ocean

These all come to mind on the top of the head, but most of the tunes in my tunebook are pretty happy if you wanna look into it. I gravitate towards the more jubilant tunes. Though, I stay away from the flowery ones.

It’s harder to find dark and fiery tunes than it is to find happy ones. They’re out there though ;)

Re: What do you think are the happiest tunes?

Sorry, I left out The High Road to Linton, Jack Daniels, and John Stenson’s #2! A reels and I love all three of them!

Re: What do you think are the happiest tunes?

Oh, AND two more jigs. Lark in the Morning and Lost and Found

I think I play Lost and Found before every practice session. Definitely one of my top 3 short jigs.

There’s just too many! Just pick up an album by your favorite band or musician and i’m sure you’ll find several crackin’ and happy tunes.

Re: What do you think are the happiest tunes?

I think some tunes are inherently happy. Having said that I think it really depends on a player’s interpretation of a tune. I love hearing a tune being played in a way that completely re-examines your previous understanding of it.

Re: What do you think are the happiest tunes?

Willafjord…hands down…I can’t hear it or play it without my best s&%@-eatin’ grin!

Re: What do you think are the happiest tunes?

Hugh Kelly by O’Carolan. I just realized it’s not in the database of tunes. I’ll submit it, but meanwhile here it is:

Re: What do you think are the happiest tunes?

Haste To The Wedding and Donnybrook Fair are both super happy jigs.

For a happy reel, I like The Sally Gardens or the Concertina Reel.

Lucy Farr’s Barndance is the most obnoxiously happy tune I’ve ever heard. It always brings to mind dancing cartoon elephants whenever I hear it. Lord knows why…

Re: What do you think are the happiest tunes?

Jackson’s Morning Brush. The epitome of ‘carefree’.

Re: What do you think are the happiest tunes?

Margaret’s Waltz
The Sweetness Of Mary
Inisheer

Somehow, these tunes in particular seem to evoke for me a restoration of paradise, and a resolution or dispersal of the melancholies of history. That’s saying quite a lot for a tune. I’d follow other posters and add The Trip To Herve’s to this list.

Re: What do you think are the happiest tunes?

Polkas.

Re: What do you think are the happiest tunes?

Though not ITM; The Happy One Step

Re: What do you think are the happiest tunes?

Little Stack of Wheat and The Galtee Hunt are so happy they make me giddy. Gotta love hornpipes, especially if you play banjo!

Re: What do you think are the happiest tunes?

The Dingle Regatta

Re: What do you think are the happiest tunes?

"The Boy In The Gap" along with "The Boy In The Boat" would be in the ‘happiest’ percentile. (The ‘happiest’ percentile is huge, BTW.) You can find appropriately named tunes there too, such as (roughly translated from the Irish) "The Whole World Loves Me." That one’s also a real beauty, IMHO, ……… except when I play it.

Re: What do you think are the happiest tunes?

Are any of them really happy?

Re: What do you think are the happiest tunes?

After more than ten years of playing, I’d never heard Calliope House, and now I’m mad at my teachers for never teaching it me, because I could have been enjoying it for ten years now!

Re: What do you think are the happiest tunes?

Doc:

Aye! Loads of em!

Re: What do you think are the happiest tunes?

the In and out jig by katie McNally🙂
