Downloading Videos from ComhaltasLive?

Downloading Videos from ComhaltasLive?

For some time now - I’ve been bookmarking nice tunes on the Comhaltas Website so I can go back and listen to them later.

I find the navigation of the site is quite good but not perfect - so searching (as an example) for solo fiddle hornpipes isn’t as straight forward as it could be.

Anyway to the point of my question - bookmarking pages is a pain and I’m not always somewhere where I can access the internet.

Where do I download the videos from the Comhaltas website - or do I have to email them for copies?

Re: Downloading Videos from ComhaltasLive?

http://rg3.github.io/youtube-dl/ seems to handle it without difficulty, at least on the one I just tried. (comhaltaslive_433_full_programme)

Re: Downloading Videos from ComhaltasLive?

Cool thanks for the link - I’ll have to do a bit of work to get that up and going on my osx - but it’ll be great if it works. :-)

Re: Downloading Videos from ComhaltasLive?

No unfortunately I can’t get that to work - despite a few hours attempting it - it seems that none of the instructions for installing it work on my OS. Most of the UNIX commands are not recognised/installed and the more I try to update or install them the more commands I’m discovering aren’t present - so short of spending a year studying UNIX in depth, and updating my system entirely - I don’t think its an option.

I’m surprised there isn’t a direct download link on the Comhaltas website considering the Creative Commons Licence - I would have thought it may even be required by the licence.

Re: Downloading Videos from ComhaltasLive?

You could always just download the audio. I used to use YTD to download the video, but it doesn’t work now apparently.

Yeah you’re right gam - I guess I could settle for the Audio - but I guess I have so much audio - I’d like some video too - plus there’s the additional info I get from looking at the posture and bowing, and observing the relaxed manner of the musicians.

Re: Downloading Videos from ComhaltasLive?

Realplayer has a downloading facility, realplayer downloader. When installed and a video is playing you have the option of clicking on a realplayer downloader bar near the top of the video to download what is playing. I’m not technical enough to know the limitations of compatibilities, but it’s free to try.

Re: Downloading Videos from ComhaltasLive?

Mikiemax - I use Downloadhelper (free) for Firefox great for saving youtube, Comhaltas and other source videos - works for Mac and windows

If you’re using Safari you can download through the activity menu but it’s fiddly

Re: Downloading Videos from ComhaltasLive?

It’s also pretty simple to download the video file directly. It will be in .flv which players like Media Player Classic and VLC Media Player handle without issue. Go to the page with the video you want, view the source for the page (how you do that depends on your browser; google it), and search for ‘.flv’ (without the quotes). You will find that .flv will be at or near the end of a string of characters that starts with something along the lines of "http://media.comhaltas.ie/video" copy and paste that entire string (starting with http, ending with .flv, and getting rid of anything before http and after .flv) into your browser’s address bar and bam, there it is.

Re: Downloading Videos from ComhaltasLive?

I have found this process works for me using Safari on the Mac:

In Safari:
- Enable the developer menu (preferences/Advanced/"Show developer menu in menu bar"

- Load the web page in Safari, play the vid. Call the "Show page resources" in the Develop menu
-click on the video on the web page - the Inspect button allows you to click on the video on the web page and display the location of the code in the page.

It will highlight a block of code such as:
<embed type="application/x-shockwave-flash" src="/swf/flvplayer.swf" width="426" height="345" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer" bgcolor="#FFFFFF" flashvars="file=http://media.comhaltas.ie/video/cl435_flv/cl435_6.flv&amp;showdigits=true&amp;height=400&amp;autostart=false">

- Select and copy the Full URL - this will be a long url that starts with http:// and ends with a .flv flash video file - from above code: http://media.comhaltas.ie/video/cl435_flv/cl435_6.flv
- copy and paste this long address into another Sarari browser tab and the FLV video will start to download.

- You can playback FLV video files using VLC video player

Re: Downloading Videos from ComhaltasLive?

Thanks for all the suggestions - I actually found a method that works now, by locating the temporary flash file in the relevant tmp folder on my laptop and simply copying it once it is fully loaded into the flash player - still would be nice to have a direct download link on the page. :-)

Re: Downloading Videos from ComhaltasLive?

It would be nice, and I’m not sure why they don’t, since they don’t seem to be trying to make it difficult to do it directly.

Re: Downloading Videos from ComhaltasLive?

I just tried the method suggested above by hotsauce above — I use Chrome, and a simple R-click on the page, not the screen, offers a ‘view source’ option. Scroll through the text and look for the line ending (dot)flv as suggested, and paste it into your browser, and it downloads automatically in a couple of seconds. The hardest bit is finding the relevant line, but there’s only one, and the text is laid out to mirror the page, so it isn’t so difficult.

Re: Downloading Videos from ComhaltasLive?

That works in Firefox ( is there no ‘Find’ function in the Chrome source viewer ? :-/)

Re: Downloading Videos from ComhaltasLive?

Ah yeah, that’s probably the handiest way gam, thanks. And thanks hotsauce for providing the best method (as voted by thesession members) for "whipping" videos from a Flash based website. ;-)
