Whistle keys that Brian Finnegan uses

Whistle keys that Brian Finnegan uses

Can anyone tell me what are the different whistle keys that Brian has played using the Goldie whistles on his Flook recordings. They sound great but I am unable to determine the keys that he is using. It sure would be helpful if they could add this information to their recordings. Kevin Crawford’s latest CD “Carrying the Tune” does a nice job telling you the key he is playing in with each of his tracks, whether it is whistle or flute.Would anyone know the more common whistle keys Brian Finnegan likes to play? Thanks for any input you may have.

Re: Whistle keys that Brian Finnegan uses

For "Flook live in Sidmouth" nearly all the tracks are F alto whistle or bamboo flute in the same key. Exceptions are the Peter’s epic journey set (on A whistle if memory serves) and the ‘History Man’ (Eb flute.)

One of the reasons mike left flook was that he wanted to play more stuff on wooden flute apparently, whereas Brian then tends to go to more tin whistle playing in D, Eb and A whistles on later recordings. I don’t have Flatfish any more, that album is transitional and has some alto F whistle.

Rubai: Baldy Hollow/ The Empty Pod: If memory serves they are both playable on a D whistle.
North Star/ etc jigs: Eb tin whistle
Beehive set. A whistle
Glass Polska: Bb flute
Pressed For Time: Eb whistle
Granny/ Blue Ball/ False Proof: I don’t like the first tune and never learned it, the second two are on A whistle
Quiet Mind/Rosbeg: Doable on F whistle, i think he’s playing an Olwell F flute for the first and an F whistle for the second
Larry/ Elzic’s: G alto whistle sounds great, he’s playing a G olwell flute. Can be done on an A whistler at a pinch.
Rasmnee Ceilidh/ Natterjacks/ Conlagh: D whistle/ A whistle/ D whistle. Although I prefer playing Natterjacks on an E low whistle, because i don’t have an A whistle.

Re: Whistle keys that Brian Finnegan uses

Haven CD:
Tortoise and the Hare/ Girls of Boisdale: A low whistle/ D tin whistle
Gone Fishing: Hate this tune, so never learned it
Mouse jigs: All on A whistle
Souter Creek: Think they’re both on a Bb flute
Asturian Way: A whistle. Including the last one, although this requires extensive crossfingering
Wrong Foot Forward/Reels: A whistle, then D whistle for the reels
Road to Errogie set : all on F whistle

Didn’t learn the rest

Re: Whistle keys that Brian Finnegan uses

oh, and Padraigs/ Fechin Inn are on A whistles too, just had a blast through.

Re: Whistle keys that Brian Finnegan uses

Gone Fishing/Shuffle is Low A.. I like this tune
On one: Beautiful Day: Low D
Flatfish Set: Low F
Eflat reels: Do I have to say?
(From Solo Album)
Steps: Low F
Fly: Low F
Marga’s: High D
Belfast and Nightride : High Eb
Joy and Frida: Low F
Only: Low AbWhistle, but this one i’m not sure…
Sligo: High Eb

Kan

Lori: Bb Whistle
Marcos Llope: Eb Whistle/Oblique: D whistle/Hayden’s Rock: Low A
Slide From Grace/Queen of Ragoon: Eb whistle
Coriolis: High D/Hold up the Sky: Low A
Modul 1: High D/Coyakan: E Whistle

Correction

Fly is Low A! Sorry…

Re: Whistle keys that Brian Finnegan uses

Disagree with some of the Kan ones:
Mangattak: All on D whistles (except possibly the first one)
Marcos’ set: All on Eb
Noble set: D whistles
Modul 1: low A/Coyoacan: low E whistle

Think Coriolis is on a low A as well, but i don’t have an A whistle to check.

Anyone know what key Eva’s is in?

Re: Whistle keys that Brian Finnegan uses

Thanks for all of your input with this this question.

Re: Whistle keys that Brian Finnegan uses

Cool!

Re: Whistle keys that Brian Finnegan uses

Kan:-

Marcos - Eb Flute & High Eb whislte
Eva - Bb flute (uses a bamboo one live)
One Two Three - Bb Whistle, F Whistle, Bb Whsitle

Brian Finnegan (Ravishing Genius Of Bones):-

Fly - All on A whistle
Starrs - D Flute (although at the Kan gig last week he played it on an Eb Flute)
Frida - Either F whistle or F Flute, I can’t quite make my mind up
Nightride - on the album it’s played on a Soprano D - when played as the Nightride Set by Kan it’s played on an Eb whsitle, by far the best version imo.
