The Olllam ( For the open minded)

The Olllam ( For the open minded)

I happened to stumble across this extremely interesting band called The Olllam! Wow, I think it’s fantastic! I know a majority of thesession won’t like this, but give it a listen and maybe a chance! Its a project with John Mcsherry and some american artists. I would suggest looking up their music. So good.

It’s good stuff. Great playing.

And if you like this general sort of musical direction, you might also check out the Aldoc album, and Padraig Rynne’s new album Notify.

Thanks, I def will!

Re: The Olllam ( For the open minded)

Tyler Duncan, one of the members of this group, studied the uilleann pipes with Al Purcell in the Detroit area. He is a very talented multi-intrumentalist. Within a couple of years of studying the pipes, he won an All-Ireland title in his age group. He was pushing the musical boundaries even then, and he could try Al Purcell’s patience as he pushed beyond the tradition. Those who knew Al have an appreciation for how much he valued the tradition. Yet as much as Al Purcell loved the tradition, he recognized that Tyler was a unique talent. Tyler went on to become friends with John McSherry, and this group gives them the opportunity to push the music into new areas. It’s not for everyone, but you have to admit these young men are talented.

Not such a good track for listening, unless you actually want to hear the talking, rather than the music. There are some better clips on youtube.

It’s great! Been listening to the album frequently about a year and still I discover new details! Fantastic music regardless of genre!

Re: The Olllam ( For the open minded)

It’s good, but it’s not quite Gloaming.

(Lager drinkers will get it…)

Re: The Olllam ( For the open minded)

They are really pushing the boundaries (what’s dem?) … not really my cup of tea, but I fully appreciate the value of their efforts.

Re: The Olllam ( For the open minded)

Also worthy of note is Tyler’s band Millish, which released an album and still occasionally plays gigs around these parts. Far more traditional than The Olllam, though still not very traditional. I think my favorite track of theirs is the one where they segue straight from “The (Poor) Scholar” into “Blue Rondo ala Turk”: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fgY4utez0iw#t=128 (live version, and they’re usually better in sync than they are right at the start there, probably having trouble hearing each other in the monitors.) (If you click on the link, it will open a Youtube page that starts right where the “Scholar” starts. The image below is the entire live set.)
