Re: The other pipe on the hob please?

That is one of the jigs with that name. The other one is commonly played in Ador.

Re: The other pipe on the hob please?

I don’t believe either is actually named #1 or #2, although that might be how they’re printed in a book. Spillane and Glackin do a savage job of the 3-part Dorian one on Forgotten Days btw.

Aye, but it’s a CCE book so it’s official now.

Re: The other pipe on the hob please?

Cheeky: I think its more a case of Old & New. Maybe it should put put in this way ?

T: The Old Pipe on the Hob ( Att, Paddy Canny )

T:The New Pipe on the Hob ( Att, Bothy Band )

Re: The other pipe on the hob please?

Just poking a little fun at the CCE, F4. 😉

But that would work, I think.

Re: The other pipe on the hob please?

I think you might have the ‘old’ and ‘new’ backwards. The A dorian tune was old before anyone in the Bothy band was even born.

Re: The other pipe on the hob please?

I have posted a slightly different version of "Pipe on the Hob" in D mixoldian/D major (whichever one prefers to call it) on our store’s website. It came from box player Michael O’Brien, Co. Leitrim who came to Tallahassee, Florida on a visit in the late ‘90’s. It’s the major version more like Paddy Canny’s version rather than the A dorian version as recorded by The Bothy Band. We have played it with Michael’s different take on the first phrase at the Tallahassee various sessions now for years. Take a look at it & my comment from Tomas O’Canainn’s book on "inflection" on the Tune section of our store’s website. With inspiration from Sligo players like Des Collis and Michael O’Brien we’ve carried on Irish trad sessions in Tallahassee since 1992. See www.gordonsstringmusic.com/tunes There’s a link there to send a return email if you have comments.

Re: The other pipe on the hob please?

Here’s the "other" pipe on the hob. https://thesession.org/tunes/81 I learned of it only in an online argument recently. I would like to see how far back either tune goes in published scores.

Re: The other pipe on the hob please?

It looks like both were published in O’Neill’s Dance Music of Ireland in 1907.
