Recordings of the "Session of the Century"

Recordings of the "Session of the Century"

Over the last few months I did share some rare recordings from the Willie Clancy festival. None of those recordings belongs to any commercial release and it’s not the average stuff you can buy on iTunes or in a store. In my opinion those recordings deserve an audience and should serve educational purposes. I also wanted people to help me with identifying the tunes from those tapes. (I am referring to this old thread : https://thesession.org/discussions/33006). KidOnTheMountain did an impressive identification work but he did not identify tunes from the 3 recordings below !

I guess people were a little bit scared to download the mp3 from my DropBox because of viruses so I joined all the mp3 together and put them on my Soundcloud account. People can now listen them directly on the Internet without downloading them :

https://soundcloud.com/ralexhassle/session-of-the-century-2

https://soundcloud.com/ralexhassle/session-of-the-century-3

I would be extremly glad if some poeple could help me with identifying the tunes. Soundcloud allows listeners to leave comments at specific points in the waveform.

Enjoy,
Ralex

Re: Recordings of the "Session of the Century"

In the discussion about this a week ago most of the tunes that Creadur just identified were already identified. Why don’t you indicate what’s already known so we don’t duplicate effort? You really need to set up a central "clearing house" for the information.

Re: Recordings of the "Session of the Century"

@Ralex: Thanks - I’ve got track 1 now

@Gary: Thanks for alerting me to that fact. I’ll refer back to the earlier thread to see which gaps need filling.

…Funny - DavidT got to exactly the same point as me before he passed on the baton. He gave a couple of different titles, and one title I couldn’t theink of (The Sweet Flowers of Milltown - Track 2, set 2, tune 2)

Re: Recordings of the "Session of the Century"

Thank you for these they are great - although I do wonder why the recordings are up a whole tone?

Re: Recordings of the "Session of the Century"

Great session recordings - thanks. Answering the above query, it’s possibly a so-called Eb session.
Ralex, have you any idea who the players are….or did I miss that bit?

Re: Recordings of the "Session of the Century"

@Danny: Some of the players were identified on this thread https://thesession.org/discussions/34588

Jacky Daly, Mairead ni Mhaonaigh, Frankie Kennedy and Ciaran Curran were mentioned - not necessarily all playing on all tunes.

Re: Recordings of the "Session of the Century"

I was at Track 2. Queally’s bar in 1985 in the afternoon. At, not in, because the place was so packed that we couldn’t get in and had to listen standing in the street. My mate taped it through the window but this seems to come from someone else’s recording. It sounds considerably speeded up to me. (They were playing in Eb.) The core of the session was Jackie Daly, Mairead and Frankie, Paul O’Shaughnessy, Eoin O’Neill on bouzouki and Mick O’Connor on banjo. Mary Bergin was there for bits of it. Later on in the afternoon most of them spilled across the road into Cleary’s kitchen where they were joined by Dermy Diamond and Henry Benagh - we were able to get in to that one!

Re: Recordings of the "Session of the Century"

Great Music…. it sounds more like a Eb sharp session….
Ralex do you have these other 2 recordings (1 and 3) on the dropbox (or downloadable), would be good listening on an MP3 device while traveling.

just to fill in one of the gaps
Set 10 (reels)
i. The Controversial (I think)

Re: Recordings of the "Session of the Century"

Actually the Eb sharp might go along with the fact that Stiamh believes it’s speeded up.

Re: Recordings of the "Session of the Century"

Here’s what I’ve come up with for Track 1. Quite a few gaps to fill yet. I’m not too hot on the Donegal tunes - and there are a few that sound oh-so-familiar, but I just can’t place them. Thanks to contributors to the Tunes section and Jeremy’s search engine for a few of the IDs.

Track 1:

Set 1 (jig)
i. The College Groves (see also Track 2, set 6)
ii. The Humours of Scariff
iii. Marry When You’re Young* (see also Track 2, set 6)

Set 16
The Chorus Reel

Set 17 (reel)

iii. The Old Pigeon on the Gate

*I concede to DavidT’s ID of Marry When You’re Young for this tune. The West Cork is closely related, but has a couple of significant differences.

Re: Recordings of the "Session of the Century"

"It sounds considerably speeded up to me."

It’s quite likely that the tape recorder was running slow, hence playback comes out fast.

Re: Recordings of the "Session of the Century"

"hence playback comes out fast" …. and sharp

Re: Recordings of the "Session of the Century"

The tune on track 2 before Buckley’s Fancy is "Old Cuffe Street". L’irlandais is right that Cedars of Lebanon is preceded by Billy McComiskey’s "The Controversial".

There was a fair bit of crack at this session to go with the flat-out tunes. The late Frankie Kennedy was on good form and at one point shouted"Hello Mum!" and blew a raspberry into my friend’s microphone that was dangling through the window. 🙂 You can hear him providing a running commentary on this set where Jackie D hams up the Tenessee Waltz (and Maid Behind the Bar) in style.

Re: Recordings of the "Session of the Century"

I have had a cassette copy of this fantastic recording for years,

out of curiosity….who was the sound recordist please?

Re: Recordings of the "Session of the Century"

@peter. If you are talking about "track 2" I’d say more than one recording was made because the one I have doesn’t have all the sets that are in the one Ralex posted, but does have a few others that don’t seem to be there. Mine was made by a friend from Melbourne that I have lost touch with and I don’t know that he’d want his name bandied about. I know that a few other people got copies of his tape at the time. It was made on a Sony Walkman, not the Professional model, and the quality was excellent. I say "was" because my copy at least was knackered from 25 years of repeated playing.

Re: Recordings of the "Session of the Century"

by the way did you check my "bonus" link ? there is more…

Re: Recordings of the "Session of the Century"

… now there’s a chat-up line and a half! 😀

Re: Recordings of the "Session of the Century"

This is wonderful stuff - thanks Ralex. Staimh - can you confirm that it was an Eb session ? I would like to shift them back to their original tempo.

peter wsll has previously referred to "… the bootleg tape ‘Through the window at Queeley’s’ ". Where there microphones dangling through several windows or just the one ?

Re: Recordings of the "Session of the Century"

Yes it was an Eb session. Just checked against my recording, well, my digitized version of the copy of the tape given to me by the aforementioned friend from Melbourne. IIRC his was the only microphone dangling through the window we were standing at, we were the only people standing at that window, and that was the only window of the tiny bar (actually Queally’s living room) that gave onto the street. I think it was me that christened the recording "Through the window at Queally’s" but who cares.

Re: Recordings of the "Session of the Century"

Thanks Stiamh. I am not sure when I will get to it but I will post the cents shift(s) required when I work them out.

( I had checked the "bonus" link - which I why I am note sure how soon I will get back to these 🙂 🙂 🙂)

Set 12 (jigs)
i. Johnny Boyle’s
ii. Darby the Driver

Set 13 (hornpipes)
i. Dapper’s Delight
ii. unknown
iii. The Humours of Tullycrine

More to follow.

I should add that when I started labelling each bit ‘Set 1, Set 2 etc.’, it didn’t occur to me that not all the tunes would be played in sets. Daft as it is calling it a ‘set’ when it’s only one tune, I decided to continue using the same labelling for consistency’s sake. I hardly needed to explain that - I just don’t want people thinking I’m a complete fool. Partial fool is OK.

Re: Recordings of the "Session of the Century"

amazing work creadur ! and what do you think about the bonus link i’ve put above ? don’t worry i don’t want to give you more job but just your mind about those recordings

Re: Recordings of the "Session of the Century"

I wasn’t even playing 7 years ago, there was something a few months ago, maybe on a different site with the Paddy Carty session, does that mean I went and worked out all those names myself ?

Re: Recordings of the "Session of the Century"

by the way the first tune on track 16 is the blackthorn stick, which means someone else must have found the name of the tunes.

Re: Recordings of the "Session of the Century"

Here’s the rest of Track 3. For the sake of discontinuity (;)) and your ease of navigation, I have done here what I should have been doing from the start and added the start time for each tune.
Some great fiddling on here. Could the first set be Eileen O’Brien? And the older-sounding fiddler (17 & 18) Sean Ryan, maybe?

Track 3 contd.

Re: Recordings of the "Session of the Century"

@Ralex: I look forward to listening to the bonus track. Thanks.

Re: Recordings of the "Session of the Century"

@Stiamh: It’s great to hear from someone that was actually there. I was still learning my times tables back then.

Re: Recordings of the "Session of the Century"

Ralex, here it is, https://thesession.org/discussions/33006#comment704982 what would be really appreciated is to not ask for the same thing twice, in other words when people do up date the tune info you update the dropbox.

Otherwise this could go on for another 7 years…

Re: Recordings of the "Session of the Century"

@CMO: It was great to be there. And it is great to be still around to remember it. 🙂 Cheers!

Re: Recordings of the "Session of the Century"

Thanks so much for supplying these tracks Ralex - absolutely fantastic listening, and also interesting for me as I haven’t broken into the session side of things yet.

Re: Recordings of the "Session of the Century"

I’m late getting to this thread, but in the first recording (#14), track 6:
Set 6 (reels)
i. The College Groves
ii. The West Cork (version) or Marry When You’re Young (according to David T)

I think that second tune sounds more like Johnny Doherty’s reel
https://thesession.org/tunes/201

Re: Recordings of the "Session of the Century"

The Eamonn Coyne, Siobhan Peoples & Co. folder in the "bonus" section is awesome….Anyone take a stab at that one?

The second tune of the first track is my current earworm….A version of Green Groves of Erin, perhaps?…

Re: Recordings of the "Session of the Century"

yeah nice tune indeed 🙂 but doesn’t feel like a reel to me ?

Track 1 Set 3 is Tommy Tourish’s Jig. Set 8 isn’t the Pinch of Snuff, but rather Muilleann na Maidí. Track 2 Set 7 1st Polka is the Return of Spring.

Re: Recordings of the "Session of the Century"

Does anyone know who is playing the first few tracks on the session of the century 1 sound file?
