How to Keep Current with Discussions?

How to Keep Current with Discussions?

Some contributors to The Session seem to know about and respond to discussions almost in real-time. How is that possible? I get an email update once a week. Is there an app? An RSS feed?

Re: How to Keep Current with Discussions?

You know there’s a website, right?

Re: How to Keep Current with Discussions?

… there is?

Re: How to Keep Current with Discussions?

The app is called "checking up on The Session". You too could do it - every time you finish practicing a tune, jump online and see what’s new.

Re: How to Keep Current with Discussions?

It’s easiest to respond in real time if one gives up playing.

Re: How to Keep Current with Discussions?

It is nothing to aspire to; it’s sad really

Re: How to Keep Current with Discussions?

Am I wrong in thinking that this site used to send an email when there was a response to a thread to which one had contributed?

Re: How to Keep Current with Discussions?

Ailin, no, the site never had that feature.

You do get a list of notifications on the front page of the site that let you know about any activity on tunes/recordings/sessions/events/discussions you’ve submitted. You can also get to that list from your member profile, so your notifications are here:
https://thesession.org/members/12138/notifications
And mine are here:
https://thesession.org/members/1/notifications

In answer to the original question, I guess most people have The Session bookmarked (or have the discussions section bookmarked) and check it most days.

If you’re using a mobile device, I recommend adding The Session to your home screen.

Re: How to Keep Current with Discussions?

Oh, I forgot to mention, regarding one of the original questions: "Is there an RSS feed?" Yes!

Newest discussions: https://thesession.org/discussions/new?format=rss

There are RSS feeds for most lists on the site: add "?format=rss" to the URL.

Newest tunes: https://thesession.org/tunes/new?format=rss
Newest recordings: https://thesession.org/recordings/new?format=rss
Newest events: https://thesession.org/events/new?format=rss
Newest sessions: https://thesession.org/sessions/new?format=rss

You can find more documented here:

RSS. Haha! Thanks Jeremy!

Re: How to Keep Current with Discussions?

One final note. I use LinkedIn’s Pulse newsreader app on my smartphone. It found The Session Discussions Real Simple Syndication (RSS) feed after a very quick search and plugged it into my reader list. I’m guessing there are many apps that would similarly latch onto it and let one know when a new post has been posted.

Now back to your regularly scheduled programming.

Thanks,

Barry

Re: How to Keep Current with Discussions?

I forget what an RSS is…

Re: How to Keep Current with Discussions?

Real Simple Syndication is where the Jeremys of the world make posts like yours and mine available on an internet server where the news reader program on your PC or other device can find them.

Your device checks for new content periodically and copies it into a list for you to read.

Re: How to Keep Current with Discussions?

Another way of keeping up to date with the site is to follow @sessionupdates on Twitter:
https://twitter.com/sessionupdates

Every time something new is added to the site (a discussion, an event, a session, a recording, or a tune setting), it will appear there.

Re: How to Keep Current with Discussions?

No such app that I could find! "checking up on The Session" 🙁

Re: How to Keep Current with Discussions?

News: Thanks to Jeremy, when someone posts a new comment to TheSession.org, my phone makes a little twinkle tone, an icon appears in my phone’s top status bar, and a green dot shows up on the shortcut to my little newsreader app on my phone’s home page. This is new behavior that I find very helpful for staying current on discussions.

If anyone else sees value in getting almost-real-time discussion updates, here’s what I did:

1. I downloaded and installed a news reader widget for my android phone. I chose one called "Read" because, unlike some news reader widgets that only let you subscribe to their partners, Read lets you set up a subscriptions to your own favorite news feeds or forums.

For those who don’t know, a widget differs from an app in that it continues to run in the background when it’s closed.

In Read’s settings, I added:

https://thesession.org/discussions/comments?format=rss

2. Then I set the widget to automatically check the TheSession.org website every 15 minutes, and to collect any new comments and bring them into my phone.

I could set the frequency to check more often, but every 15 minutes is often enough for me right now.

After the last twinkle sound, my status bar showed there were 2 new comments.

I can read new comments right in the widget without going to the website, or I can use a button below the comment to launch the thread in the website.

I hope that’s useful to someone. If you have any questions about what I wrote above, let me know.
