Uilleann Piping Tunes for Beginners

What are some tunes for beginners on the uilleann pipes?

Re: Uilleann Piping Tunes for Beginners

Hi Shawn Tucker,
If you are an absolute beginner I think it’s a good way to learn uilleann pipes by playing some slow air and easy march at first. For example :
Molly Malone -> https://thesession.org/tunes/12844 ;
Roddy McCorley -> https://thesession.org/tunes/6673 ;
Buachaill ón Éirne -> https://thesession.org/tunes/13602 ;
Down By The Sally Gardens -> https://thesession.org/tunes/13270 ;

You will notice that these tunes are not more than one range octave.
After that you can practice tunes that requires to "jumping the octave", for example :
Spancil Hill -> https://thesession.org/tunes/1559 ;
Inisheer -> https://thesession.org/tunes/211 ;
The Keel Row -> https://thesession.org/tunes/9755 ;

These tunes are just suggestions, there’s a lot of other tune…
Be careful, you must play slowly to master the uilleann pipes.
Good luck. 🙂

There’s a great book, the title something like "Learn To Play The Uilleann Pipes With The Armagh Pipers Club".

It gives beginning tunes in a well thought-out order, each tune introducing a specific technique.

All the tunes, as I recall, were ones widely known through commercial recordings at the time the book came out, played by famous players like Liam O Flynn and Paddy Keenan.

Yes they begin with airs and other slow tunes, then go on to easy jigs, and finally reels.

The NPU video tutor series are quite good too, and start out on very simple tunes but with a good progression.

I’ll second the recommendation on the Armagh Pipers Club tutor book also, it was the first one I ever bought and is still may favorite. Smashing tunes and the notation is very close to the versions on records.
