Boffyflow & Spike?

Boffyflow & Spike?

On the ‘Magic of the Chieftains’ album (1992) they really get it going on a piece called ‘Boffyflow & Spike’. This is a stonking piece, written by Van Morrison (who lilts on their version). It was originally a twangy guitar number, played with Moving Hearts, on the excellent ‘Sense of Wonder’ album in 1985. To my ear, it is a great a piece of lively ITM, particualrly in the hands of The Chieftains.

I think this is worthy of being added to the canon of ‘The Session’ website. I do not have the skills to transcribe this to ABCs, but wonder if anyone out there likes the track but also have the ability to share it on this site…

I’ve added a transcription of the basic tune in the ‘Tunes’ section. See what you think.

Re: Boffyflow & Spike?

Dargai, Good job, thanks, I will get a proper look at it later.

He does another nice little ditty called ‘Connswater’ (the name of the river near his childhood home in Belfast, named after Conn O‘Neill, the last old Irish Chieftain). It was on the ’Inarticulate Speech of the Heart Album’. I have never heard it played in full trad. form. The original version has a bit too much wishy-washy synth for my taste…
