Molly Saint George

Re: Molly Saint George

That’s a tune by Thomas Connellan, a 17 century harper from Sligo. He wrote Molly McAlpine as well which is also a great tune. It morphed within the tradition into the hornpipe Poll Ha’penny. He had a brother who was also a harper, William Connellan.

Re: Molly Saint George

Thanks Fionan…do you know of any other recordings of it?

Re: Molly Saint George

Hi Hannah,

Kathleen Loughnane has both a tune book and CD based on the music associated with the Connellan brothers called (unsurprisingly) the Harpers Connellan. I don’t have the CD myself but I have a couple of her other ones and they’re really good.

The track listing for the Harpers Connellan is:
1) The Jointure & Jig (A Ghadai Ghoid Mo Shlainte Uaim)
2) The Dawn of the Day (Eiri an Lae)
3) Bonny Jean
4) True Love Is a Tormenting Pain
5) The Two William Davis’s
6) Molly McAlpine (Maili Nic Ailpin)
7) Pol Halfpenny
8) Celia Connellan
9) Molly St,George
10) Love in Secret - Lady Iveagh
11) Lochaber
12) Marbhna Luimni - Limerick’s Lamentation - King James’s March to Dublin

Kathleen’s website is http://www.kathleenloughnane.com where you can buy the album. Afraid that’s all I know about the tune and recordings of it.

Best wishes, Fionán.

Re: Molly Saint George

Doh! Just realised that the tune is also listed on the Session as a waltz. Apparently there are five other recordings of it. Anyway there’s info on this site for you to check out.

Re: Molly Saint George

Thank you again Fionan!

Re: Molly Saint George

It’s on Chieftains 4 with the title "The tip of the whistle".

Re: Molly Saint George

Great. I will check it out!
