A Man’s A Man For A’ That inspiration and original tune

Hello!

I have a question about song and tune history that I was hoping someone could help me with:

What inspired Burns to write ‘A Man’s A Man for A’ That’, and what tune did he originally set it to?

Thank you for your help!

Re: A Man’s A Man For A’ That inspiration and original tune

He set it to the same tune as it is sung today. He also set other songs to the same tune, and it seems to have been a portable tune for newly written songs at the time.

As for the inspiration, have a look at contemporaneous events across the Channel…

Thank you so much! That is very interesting that he set many songs to this same tune. Did he write the tune, or acquire it somewhere else (/was it traditional)?

I’m assuming you mean the French Revolution! Very fitting indeed!
