Movin’ to Elmira, NY

Movin’ to Elmira, NY

Hi there! I’m moving to Elmira, NY at the end of summer and hoping to meet up with some folks there to jam. I am a novice at the bodhran, but really interested in learning more and playing with dynamic people! Would love to hear from folks in the Elmira-Corning-Ithaca, NY area! Thanks……..

Re: Movin’ to Elmira, NY

Oh my gosh, Kristen! Guys, guys, I SWEAR to you this is NOT a windup! I know Kristen from the rez, we had a little bodhrán workshop at my house…. Whoa!

Kristen, this IS a totally fabulous website that really sustained me while in Chinle, I just need to warn you, if you start any thread on here that includes the words ‘jam’ or ‘novice bodhrán player,’ or even ‘song’ when referring to a ‘tune’ ie without words, you’re very likely to find yourself at the bottom of a dogpile of slagging. I’m sure you’ll find some very nice folks in your new neck of the woods….Julie filled me in on your adventures, yay! I start my new job tomorrow & I’m not checking in here nearly as much as usual, but keep on tuning in, there are some WONDERFUL folks on here & you are sure to learn a TON! Great to see you on here & I’ll talk to you soon!!!

Hugs to Adam, Aidan & Dylan,

xo Emily

Hi Aidansmom/Kristen!

You’ll have a fabulous time in Elmira, and the surrounding areas are absolutely beautiful. Or “Gorge-ous” as they say in Ithaca. 🙂
I’m grew up in Watkins Glen, and go back to visit about once a month. I see from what’s listed on this website that there are now sessions in Ithaca, Elmira, and Rochester. This is wonderful, because growing up I never heard about any sessions in the area, and now there are a few to choose from. 🙂 I have not yet made it out to one of these sessions, but it’s on my ‘to do’ list for this summer!
I have made it to the “fiddle festival” they have at the WG State park, but the time I went they did not seem to have a large turnout of musicians, and it was mostly old-timey music, not necessarily Irish.

If you’re coming at the end of summer, you’ll be hitting right at the “high time” of the wine season in the area. There are a lot of wineries up and down the finger lakes, but I mostly only know the ones on Seneca lake. I think that the area is best known for it’s Rieslings, but they have some wonderful reds as well. Nothing to do with Irish music itself, but it’s a fun time, and a great way to meet people.

Re: Movin’ to Elmira, NY

Hi Aidansmom,
I am currently an undergrad at Cornell in Ithaca. I mainly play the Highland Bagpipe and am learning the Scottish smallpipes as well now. Not long ago I picked up a D low whistle and have been playing lots with that and love it. There are weekly great sessions in Ithaca - the 2nd and 4th Sundays at the Chapter House and 1st, 3rd and 5th at the Fall Creek House. I’ve only gone to the Chapter House ones… They start around 8 and go until around 11. The level is pretty high but everyone is very welcoming and always looking for more musicians and eager learners (me being one of them). Feel free to get in touch with me when you get in the area and I’ll let you know of other happenings and jam sessins that take place.

Re: Movin’ to Elmira, NY

thanks john! will do. am very excited to meet you.

Re: Movin’ to Elmira, NY

There’s a bunch of us in the immediate area who get together to play ITM. Hit the sessions in Ithaca to meet those folks. Contact me and I’ll link you to the Elmira and Corning folks. On Wednesday nights there’s a pub called Horigans on 2nd and Davis streets with live music by Pat Kane. Talk with him since he knows most of the Irish music scene.
There are folks who are interested in sharing their talents with eager learners. Lastly, send me your email so that I can reply directly to you.
