Trad Music in Glasgow

Trad Music in Glasgow

I will be in Glasgow for a week in August. Any suggestions on where to go for some trad music. I would mostly be there to listen, but if anyone knows a good slow session I might be able to sit in.
Thanks in advance!
Cheers.

I’ll be trying the Ben Nevis on Sundays (tip from a friend).

Re: Trad Music in Glasgow

A good friendly session at Islay inn on Mondays from 8:30 during August. See The Session listings above.
If you want to join in the Gfw Very Slow Session has sound files chords and music for their session ( also above) This session is tutor- led but everyone welcome.

Re: Trad Music in Glasgow

Ben Nevis does tend to be generally the modern Scottish scene rather than Irish, but does depend who’s playing any given night.

If it’s straight Irish trad you’re after, you’ll certainly hear high quality at the Ivory on a Friday.

Re: Trad Music in Glasgow

^Should also mention Benny McHugh at Sharkey’s on a Monday for the Glasgow Irish tradition

Re: Trad Music in Glasgow

Babbity’s on a Saturday while not “slow” as such is quite traditional and usually moves along at a reasonable pace. You should feel qute comfortable about “joining in the tunes” there as along as you know them of course….

Re: Trad Music in Glasgow

The Ben Nevis, Sharkeys and the Ivory will definitely not be slow sessions. The Monday and Thursday sessions in the Islay Inn would be slower, as would the Tuesday session in Sweeneys on the Park. You might enjoy the oldies session in Babbity Bowsters on Wednesday afternoons.

Tell me about the “oldies session” on Wednesday afternoon, Davy. I know about the Saturday one which I enjoy whenever I’m through.

Re: Trad Music in Glasgow

It starts at 3 in the afternoon, a lot of the ones that go on the Saturday go to it as well. It gets called the oldies session because most of the attendees are retired or semi retired.

Re: Trad Music in Glasgow

Aha, I might try that some day. Worth a trip through from Edinburgh on my bus pass, perhaps. ;)

Is it the same repertoire roughly, i.e the older Irish and Scottish tunes?

Re: Trad Music in Glasgow

I would assume so, considering the crossover between them. Never having been to the Wednesday session I cannot say for sure.

Re: Trad Music in Glasgow

Well Davy, there they are sounding all Scottish at the Ivory ! Obviously I was talking nonsense above ….although I’ve got some excuse as I don’t get out much now, as you know. Still get to hear the odd session, Moniaive was the last.

Re: Trad Music in Glasgow

Thanks everyone… Landed this afternoon…. Caught some interesting piping at George Square (Italian pipes with harp, guitar and whistles!!!)And gonna hit the Islay Inn later!!!
