Trad on piano

Trad on piano

Really enjoying Geraldine Cotter’s Album Piano+ can anyone recomend any other albums of trad played on piano? Anyone here doing that themselves?
While I’m here what about other not so common instruments? Im listening to Dave Flynn’s album of trad guitar so anything from guitar to sitar to piano to harpsichord to sax clarinet etc would be of interest to me.

Cheers

Re: Trad on piano

You’ve probably have heard Andy Lamy’s clarinet recording? It’s very impressive playing.
I was listening to a Daniel and Emma Reid recording called innerligheten this week. It’s saxophones and fiddle. Nice recording mostly Swedish, and Scottish tunes.
And for the reverse another nice recording I’ve been listening to this week is Markus Asunta’s Kuin Unta Ja Varjoa featuring wooden flute. The tunes are from what I can gather are Finnish hymns and Irish jigs and reels. Lovely playing which features nyckelharpa on some of the Irish tunes. The Finnish tunes are beautiful and Markus’ playing is full of character and dynamics.

Re: Trad on piano

Troy MacGillivray from Cape Breton plays amazing fiddle and piano. Most of his recordings I’ve heard are his fiddle with piano backing, but here are a few tracks I’m aware of where he plays tunes on piano:

2007 "Live at the Music Room":
Piano Reels
Neil Gow’s Lament
Ostinelli’s

2010 "When Here Meets There":
Bovaglie’s Plaid (air)
Piano Jigs

Both those albums are great listening for the fiddle as well. "When Here Meets There" has some jazzier stuff along with the Cape Breton trad. My S.O. has attended some of Troy’s fiddle workshops, and he’s a very warm, funny individual in person as well as a terrific fiddler and piano player.

Re: Trad on piano

Search for Donna Long. She played (plays?) with Cherish the Ladies.

Re: Trad on piano

As far as "less common instruments" goes, Marla Fibish and Dagger Gordon both have wonderful mandolin albums. The latter is Scottish trad, though.

Re: Trad on piano

Thanks for your suggestions. I mentioned in passing listening to dave Flynns guitar album but I have to say it’s absolutely stunning and great playing and inspiration. Thumbs up Dave.
