Three own comps - nicholas (Session member)

Three own comps - nicholas (Session member)

I thought I would be so bold as to post three urls here of own compositions I have just uploaded onto YouTube. The inspiration catalysing these comes very much from time spent in and around the places they are named after, in the Pennine uplands of County Durham (NE England). But music comes from music, and my comps mostly derive from years of playing and listening to Irish, Northumbrian and Scottish trad, in particular. I don’t get them from the fairies! The tune Whitfield Brow is in C Major on its clip, as I thought it quite particularly suited to the Northumbrian pipes, but it’s in the Tunes section here in D.

The Youtubes are the following:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8nke2WUQlYU&t=5s (Bollihope Burn)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IT-1v6Jg6kY&t=2s (Whitfield Brow)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b9I0q0qWgm4&t=13s (Killhope Top)

If any of these are seen to replicate (or as near as) tunes that are already out there, I had better take it on the chin…

These links are also entered on my Profile page, where tunes of mine in general can be found or located: https://thesession.org/members/27102

I really like Bollihope Burn well done. :)

Re: Three own comps - nicholas (Session member)

Sounds an awful lot like Cooley’s Reel to me. The second tune is kind of uneventful and the third tune doesn’t sound at all Irish to me. Rather somber and depressing, but not like a moving lament.

The first one is a fairly standard tune, nice melody. The other two, if I’m to be honest I couldn’t get through the entirety. Very uneventful as Ailin said.

Cooley’s reel? Did I listen to the same tune?

(To nicholas - keep em coming! You won’t please everyone, but I support you.)

Re: Three own comps - nicholas (Session member)

First one had shades of St Anne’s to my ear. Not always a bad thing. For instance I often hear another familiar reel behind some of Peader O Riada’s tunes. It’s as if he sometimes deconstructs other tunes while making his own.

Jeff, you are right - it isn’t Cooley’s. It’s a tune I know that is played in a set with Cooley’s that I can’t for the moment place. When I find it, I’ll be back.

Hi Nicholas, We enjoyed your tunes very much. Well done to you! From, Joe and Adele.

@jeff_lindqvist: "To nicholas - keep em coming!…"

Not on the Discussions page, I think. I feel that for me, anyway, such postings of own comps should be as rare as hen’s teeth or rarer, especially as I and they are outliers to the world of Irish music rather than definitely in and of it - though in terms of learning to play music, I would say I came up entirely through Irish music. But just this once, I thought: "Yes, I’ll go for it!…"

Thanks to all for feedback.

Re: Three own comps - nicholas (Session member)

I enjoyed listening to them, Nick, thanks for that.

Re: Three own comps - nicholas (Session member)

lovely musical playing with great technique

Re: Three own comps - nicholas (Session member)

It’s all computer-generated, on the Forte Home notation program! The ‘instrument’ sounds tend to be weirdly at variance with the sounds of the real instruments they are supposed to represent, but a bit of lateral thinking in the choice and pitch of one or another of them can get passably listenable results. I haven’t yet got round to miking up my computer / buying recording gadgets, and recording myself or others playing… :-)
