chords for the star of county down

Hey guys,
was trying to sus out chords for this song— I think version I know is in G (seems most likely key)
It’s late at night and I’m having issues drawing up music theory but i think it’s just like, standard g progression.
Any help on this one?

Re: chords for the star of county down

It’s handy to know that the melody often used for The Star Of The County Down is an old hymn tune called KINGSFOLD (it is customary to render hymn tune titles in all caps).

There’s a large number of hymns, Christmas songs, and folk songs that use this melody.

Anyhow assuming you mean guitar chords (and not keyboard etc) here’s guitar chords for KINGSFOLD (the hymn is I Heard The Voice).

I’m acually blind so posts to tabs really aren’t all that useful. Could you jsut give names of the chord progression? I"m working on learning to pick them up by ear.

Hi Blindbard, this is what the guy in the video from Dave Collins is playing:

Em G D | Em C D
Em G D | Em Am Em
G D | Em C D
Em G D | Em Am Em
G D | Em C D
Em G D | Em Am Em

Hope that helps

Ok, maybe being a spoiler, but here are the other songs I know to that same tune: any more?

Crooked Jack

And here, a very spooky version of the Unquiet Grave (which is sung to several different tunes itself)

You can’t put a good tune down!

Are you trying to play along to a certain recording? If so, maybe they play it in another key, with other chords, in another rhythm, added bars etc.

This is my number one version (Van Morrison and the Chieftains):

And this my second one (June Tabor with the Oysterband):

Both are pretty straightforward but have different chord solutions.

Re: chords for the star of county down

that’s probably it— I don’t really chord when playing irish music, just do melody. Must be part of it.

Re: chords for the star of county down

So, in which key do you play it? If you’re not sure, record a few bars on Vocaroo and post it here. Without knowing how you play it, nobody can give you the chords.

Re: chords for the star of county down

KINGFOLD is the name of the hymn tune, based on the traditional melody discovered in Sussex by Ralph Vaughan Williams. If you visit the Village of Kingsfold, be sure to have a pint at The Owl, where on the wall is a copy of his original manuscript and an explanation.
