Tunepal ABC search - Java woes

Tunepal ABC search - Java woes

My all-time favorite tune search tool is a sub-page of Tunepal that runs on Java:
http://tunepal.org/tunepal/index.php

If you’re lucky enough to figure out how to configure Java on your machine and have a browser that’s old enough to accept the security risks (and you are willing to accept them as well), you can get to the search engine on the page. It has a little box where you can type in the ABC of the tune, no bar lines needed. For me, it’s been far more accurate than the phone version of Tunepal, the ABC search in thesession.org, or any other website ABC searches.

The problem is the reliance on Java. I fear the day will come soon when this will no longer work on any browser. Does anyone know if there’s a more up-to-date version of this that’s non-Java-based?

https://tunepal.org/index.html#!/record

That would be JavaScript. :~)

Re: Tunepal ABC search - Java woes

Agree, there is no Java involved here.

Re: Tunepal ABC search - Java woes

I know about the tap-to-record desktop version of Tunepal. The problem I find with it is when I’m playing 40-year-old session recordings into it to identify tunes, there’s often a a lot of noise from the recording that interferes with the results. I’m actually much more comfortable listening to the first few bars of the tune and typing the ABC notation directly into the search engine; it just takes me a few seconds and the results are much more accurate. I suppose I could listen, then play what I hear into Tunepal, but I’m usually too lazy to go upstairs to grab a whistle!

hi kid,

you could modify the query string from the url and type there your abc directly !

I’ve had decent luck just using Google seach to match ABC snippets with tune names and resources.

Re: Tunepal ABC search - Java woes

There is also my tune search site (which is in dire need of a rewrite, and updated tune data) - http://abctunesearch.com

The main page requires a Flash Player, which is more disturbing than requiring an old Java version these days. There is a scaled down version that doesn’t require Flash here: http://abctunesearch.com/iphone.html (from the REAL early smart phone days…)

I have done some work toward building a new, modern version of the site, but I just don’t have a lot of time to dedicate to it, so not sure if or when it will ever see the light of day…

Thanks for the tips, all!
