List of (high/low) whistles

List of (high/low) whistles

Hello all,

I recently invested in a low whistle, and finding the right one for me took a bit of time. A list of all makers with the types of whistles (material, tunable, keys, swappable heads) they make would have been interesting. I got a standard low D, but especially for more obscure keys or standard vs. "session" bore, again the list would have been helpful.

Does such a list exist? If not, I’ve started making a list on Google sheets that I can share.

Thanks,
Bjoern

Re: List of (high/low) whistles

Though it’s a list of makers, not a list of everything each maker makes.

If a list went by key there would be a tremendous amount of duplication, because just about every maker makes a high D.

Where a by-key list would be helpful is when you get into keys like Ab, Gb, Db, etc and the big Bass Whistles like Bass Bb, Bass A, Bass G etc which few people make.

Re: List of (high/low) whistles

For a maker like Colin Goldie (for example) there would be a nearly infinite number of different possible whistles.

This came up recently when Calum Stewart explained about his extra-narrow-bore Goldie Low D, which is turned thinner in places, left thicker in places, to make tuning adjustments

Re: List of (high/low) whistles

Hi Richard,

thanks for your comments! The list of makers is really good, and extensive :)

My list (of whistles) is here:
http://bjohas.de/go/whistlelist (Google sheet, viewing without login, request access to edit).

It doesn’t contain nearly anywhere as many makers, but I did add the Colin Goldie ones that are advertised on his website. Of course, there are many customisations one could make, but somebody who has a large range, like Goldie or Bracker, may be the best bet in producing more exotic keys or features.

If anybody like to contribute to the list, just request access.

All the best,
Bjoern

Re: List of (high/low) whistles

For me that spreadsheet is a bit difficult to read.

What maker is "Mx"? Do you mean MK?

Alba makes more keys than you list, if I understand your spreadsheet.

Re: List of (high/low) whistles

Hi Richard,

Thanks!! Yes, MK - now corrected. I’ve also updated the Alba section. The sheet really isn’t comprehensive. I found Alba because of the bass whistles they make.

I’ve also made a form here http://bjohas.de/go/whistlesurvey - maybe I’ll send it some some of the whistle makers? Maybe they’d contribute, from source as it were!

Thanks!
