Trad Festival List

Trad Festival List

Hey everyone,
I’ve compiled a list of festivals, and was wondering if I left anything out. These are mostly Irish traditional music festivals that take place in Ireland (although a couple are more general music festivals that strongly feature ITM). I’m wondering should I add Irish traditional music festivals from around the world too?! Obviously huge ones like Milwaukee, the Catskills? It was a much bigger task, so I just focused on Ireland for a moment. Thanks for your input hive mind!

Re: Trad Festival List

What a list. Fair dues for making it up 🙂

Is Temple Bar Trad really a Irish traditional music festival? ;)

And what about all the County Fleadhs and Provincial Fleadhs? These are often weekend events in every sense.

Re: Trad Festival List

Can I add Feile Chois Cuain - Louisburgh Music Festival please? First May Day Bank Holiday weekend in Co. Mayo. I didn’t get there this year but am sure to return when I can. ( There’s a fada on the ‘e’ but I’m afraid that’s beyond my keyboard skills…!)

Re: Trad Festival List

Great piece of work! Thanks.
But if you’ve the time or energy, possible refinements? E.g. list alphabetically, chronologically or by region?

Re: Trad Festival List

Thanks guys! There are just so many county and provincial fleadh, it looked a bit weird having so many on there. Maybe I will though. It’s listed in order by month that it generally takes place, and locations. I had the list saved in a 3 coloum table in word and it didn’t copy right.
Thanks for posting that link and fest that I left off!

Re: Trad Festival List

Good grief! All that in Ireland alone! We outlanders have some catching up to do (hello Australia, I’m talking to you)
Such a large percentage of Irish ancestry here but little in the way of music festivals and schools. *shakes head*

Re: Trad Festival List

Irish ancestry is utterly irrelevant to playing Irish music!

Re: Trad Festival List

There’s also the Phil Murphy in Wexford - going many years now

& Strokestown

and I’m sure several others 🙂

There’s a long tradition of fairs and summer days in rural Ireland but somewhere along the line in the last twenty years or so, people also became aware of the success of the Willie Week and Joe Mooney etc. So the idea is ‘copied’ a lot as something to build a bit of a festival around.

Yes, I know, I do have a friend of Indian ancestry that plays ITM so I know what you’re talking about, but people with a general interest their Irish family roots are more likely to gravitate toward traditional Irish music than the non Irish. At least it seems that way to me. I can’t back that up with evidence.

Re: Trad Festival List

Thanks Choons. This is a really helpful list, especially the links to the Festival Websites. Margaret Barry evening on the first Monday of Whitby - I will risk missing a session for this! Mmmm.

Re: Trad Festival List

Thanks for the Round Up of Festivals, it only serves to show me what I’m missing due to lethargy. I really and truly intend to visit at least one… . . !

Re: Trad Festival List

Turning Wave festival Yass, NSW Australia Sept 14-16.
The only almost exclusively irish music fest in NSW or even Australia maybe. About 5 hours drive for me :( , 4 or so hours from Sydney.

Re: Trad Festival List

Two more for your list, the Nyah in Cavan in March and Féile Patrick Byrne in Monaghan in March/April.

Re: Trad Festival List

The Anne and Pat Molloy Summer school is in Birmingham, England, as the link says. Another one I can recommend and also thankfully attend.

Re: Trad Festival List

Thanks for the adds!
