Darby O’Gill and the Little People: The Fox Chase Song

Re: Darby O’Gill and the Little People: The Fox Chase Song

I saw that movie nearly 25 years ago, and the only tune I remember is The Rakes of Mallow, but it’s not in this clip. The jig sounds very much like a cliche composition (especially when the orchestra joins in, the minor version of the theme, the typical instrumental movements etc.).

Re: Darby O’Gill and the Little People: The Fox Chase Song

Some day I hope to be able to play the fiddle like that. His bow strokes are so smooth and carefree it hardly even looks like they’re touching the strings.

Re: Darby O’Gill and the Little People: The Fox Chase Song

I remember seeing this movie as a kid - the music is about as authentically Irish as the klezmer in Fiddler on the Roof or the cowboy music in ‘Oklahoma’. Film directors in those days really didn’t have a clue about traditional music.

@Otterwoman - you could look here : https://www.tunescribers.com/

Aye, John Doherty gave a mighty performance there 🙂

I tried to find more info about the fiddle scene, but there was nothing about that specifically.

On the fiddling, one of the YouTube comments read, " … those aren’t his hands. The Actor playing Darby couldn’t play the violin. Instead, the right hand was being played by one violinist, and the left hand played by another."

So now you know!

**2nd thoughts**

I’m on my "big" computer now, and I just noticed that it’s $19.50 per minute on https://www.tunescribers.com/, so maybe not such a good idea!

Re: Darby O’Gill and the Little People: The Fox Chase Song

Looks like he’s just miming at playing the fiddle. The fingers hardly move.

Re: Darby O’Gill and the Little People: The Fox Chase Song

@Jeff_ I believe you’re remembering Rakes of Mallow from the film Quite Man. That tunes runs throughout the movie in various themes. The high point for me in the Darby O’Gill film is the drunken rhyming song competition between King Brian and Darby. "I’d love for to marry the old widow Tunney - she’s ugly as sin, but has beautiful money.."

Re: Darby O’Gill and the Little People: The Fox Chase Song

Acutally I’m pretty sure it’s in Darby O’Gill - one of the leprecahuns dances to the tune (which I believe was Mixolydian). It’s also mentioned as being part of the soundtrack (although uncredited in the film): https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0052722/soundtrack?ref_=tt_trv_snd

I haven’t seen Quite Man.

Re: Darby O’Gill and the Little People: The Fox Chase Song

It’s probably in both films but after seeing this post, yesterday I watched the movie (most of it at least) and the Rakes are definitely played in Darby O’Gill.

Re: Darby O’Gill and the Little People: The Fox Chase Song

Actually I managed to transcribe it sort of, close enough that it’s definitely the same tune.
