A twisted, dirty, minor HORNPIPE???

A twisted, dirty, minor HORNPIPE???

I’ve always thought of hornpipes as naff rumpity pumpity snoozefests. Anyone got a wild minor hornpipe to show me the light??

Re: A twisted, dirty, minor HORNPIPE???

A couple that come to mind are:

The King of the Fairies
Humours of Tullycrine
Peacock’s Feathers
Rodney’s Glory
Poll Ha’penny

not necessarily the twistiest of hornpipes, but they’re all good ones…

Re https://thesession.org/tunes/1985 I always prefer the Ebb Tide myself, which is oddly at odds with the other tidal names for this tune. Colm Gannon does a good version of this on box, IIRC, which is more apt than the twee one above!

Christopher, I suspect none of the examples given here will satisfy your desire for a wild, twisted, dirty HORNPIPE. And that’s because a hornpipe (in lower case) is essentially a graceful tune for a relaxed dance (not the frantic affair danced by Barbie Doll look-alikes in competitions).

So you’ll probably have to continue thinking of hornpipes as “naff rumpity pumpity snoozefests”.

Your profile says you are “Hunting for modern rad trad.” I’m not sure what “rad trad” means, but you won’t find it in Irish hornpipes. Not unless, that is, you find someone who ratchets up the speed and volume and plays it like a too-fast reel; but that’s just GBH on a hornpipe.

Hi all, anyone know the name of the “traditional hornpipe” the sean nós lassies are dancing to? Thanks
