The Last “The Rolling Wave” on RTE, Sunday 26th August 2018

The Last “The Rolling Wave” on RTE, Sunday 26th August 2018

Shocked to hear Peter Browne say at the end of last Sunday’s “The Rolling Wave” that the next show will be his last. Sad, and annoying to consider so many of these great programmes over the years that I missed. The last five or six weeks should be available for on RTE Radio Player - any chance of a more comprehensive archive being made available?
I can’t find any info online on why this is coming to an end, but anyway, many thanks to him for many years (how many?) of sharing so much great music, great knowledge and perception, and excellent interviews (eg last Sunday’s with Sean Keane) etc etc.

“The Rolling Wave” archive

Apparenty all the progs going back to October 2011 are there for streamed listening via RTÉ Radio Player, on the Rolling Wave page on the RTÉ Radio One website. See
https://www.rte.ie/radio1/the-rolling-wave/
Head for the menu bar that lists
Home | Archive 2018 | 2017 | 2016 | 2015 | More
“More” appears to suggest that progs going all the way back to 2006 can be previewed and listened to, but it seems there was an IT change that made it impossible to hear RWs dating from before October 2011. However, there should still be close on 400 progs that people can listen to!
Perhaps someone could suggest to RTÉ that it would be much appreciated if they could make all the programmes back to 2006 accessible to everyone everywhere! So much great material there.

Thanks for letting us know!

Re: The Last “The Rolling Wave” on RTE, Sunday 26th August 2018

Did you hear there, the show will still continue, just with a different presenter, Aoife NicChormaic

Re: Aoife NicChormaic, “The Rolling Wave” on RTE, Sunday 3rd Sept 2018

Yes, thanks, had amended text to reflect that Peter Browne had only said it was his last prog, but forgot to amend the subject line - to ‘Peter Browne’s last “The Rolling Wave” on RTE, Sunday 26th August 2018’ (any way to do that retrospectively?). Hence current subject line Aoife NicChormaic, “The Rolling Wave” on RTE, Sunday 3rd Sept 2018. Best of luck to her, shall of course be continuing to listen .
Everything else stands as written, though, and nice to see all the tributes at

ie Aoife NicChormaic,“The Rolling Wave” on RTE, Sunday 2nd Sept 2018, not 3rd (sorry)

Aoife NicChormaic,“The Rolling Wave” on RTE, eventually

Oh no - further apologies, forgot there will be a few other Rolling Waves ("some repeats next month and folk music documentaries") before Aoife NicChormaic actually takes over … so prob that won’t be on the the 2nd either … (might have been a help if RTE had said all that in the first place)

Only caught that news at the end there last night, when he was signing off. Didn’t hear it every week but often caught parts, we’ll miss Peter Browne’s voice and of course the great variety and many aspects of Irish trad that he featured. A very under rated programme and worthy of many more listeners.

Re: The Last “The Rolling Wave” on RTE, Sunday 26th August 2018

I was sorry to hear that announcement too! I didn’t always catch it on the Sunday evening, but would always try to listen back at some stage during the week on the RTÉ Radio Player app. Peter always featured a great variety of stuff, including all kinds of old and obscure archive material. Also, whenever a well-known trad musician died, you could nearly bet the house that there’d be a great Rolling Wave dedicated to them in the upcoming weeks.

Enjoy the retirement, Peter!
