Stolen Olwell

Stolen Olwell

I’m posting this for my friend Scott Miller since he’s on his honeymoon.
His keyless Olwell Pratten in blackwood was either lost by or stolen at the Atlanta airport. We’re not sure of the serial # or if Olwell even numbers them (does anyone know if he does?). I do know this has been his primary session flute for close to 15 years.
If anyone happens to run across an eBay or other online posting that matches the description, or on the unlikely chance you find yourself in an Atlanta pawn shop or music store, please let one of us know.
You can email me at thomaston@gmail.com or contact him directly via his email milles4@gmail.com
Many thanks!

“He hasn’t always done so, although he does have a sequential record of every flute he’s made and who its initial owner was. I’m not sure when he started putting the serial number on the flute itself, but it was sometime after I got my Olwell in 1992, since mine doesn’t have its serial number on it. Actually, he probably started doing this sometime after 1997, since that was when I got my keyed pieces which necessitated me returning the headjoint to him for a few days so he could measure it for the new pieces. If he had been engraving the serial numbers on headjoints then, I’m sure he would have put it on my headjoint while he had it in the shop. He will retrofit serial numbers onto flutes that don’t have them if you want - he has offered to do mine but I haven’t yet taken him up on his offer. I probably ought to do that - it would provide a good excuse to visit his shop, which I have heard is a pretty interesting place…”

Re: Stolen Olwell

Make sure that Patrick is informed too. Often times if someone tries to pawn an expensive instrument like that, the pawn shop will contact the maker (under the guise of determining the value). So Patrick would be able to keep an eye out for that as well. And he would most likely have records of the sale (if it was purchased directly from him), so he would be able to tell you the serial number.

Re: Stolen Olwell

If it’s a 15 year old flute, it should absolutely have a number printed under the end cap.

Re: Stolen Olwell

My friend was not the original owner. I’m going to see if he remembers who he bought it from. Maybe then Pat can find the number. Thanks, everyone.
