RIP Vincent Campbell

RIP Vincent Campbell

I’m very late, but I just learned that Donegal fiddler Vincent Campbell left us just over 2 weeks ago, on December 2. Love his music, his distinctive style, and his stories. Another loss to traditional music in a year full of them. RIP.

Re: RIP Vincent Campbell

Thanks for the link, joe fidkid. Great playing and stories - it’s a shame it took his passing to make me aware of them.

Re: RIP Vincent Campbell

Agree with you, CMO. I knew about his album "The Purple Heather", his contributions to "The Brass Fiddle", and various YouTube videos, but not that. Thanks, Joe.

Re: RIP Vincent Campbell

A fine fiddler, all right. RIP.

Re: RIP Vincent Campbell

There is a Russian web-site which offers mp3 downloads of old LPs, most from companies which have succumbed to the ravages of time. Years ago I downloaded an LP, one of Vincent Campbell’s recordings. I was impressed (and still am) by Campbell’s delicate touch and mastery of the melodies. My main fiddle influences are Paddy Canny and Bobby Casey, but Vincent Campbell added another hair to my bow, so to speak.

Re: RIP Vincent Campbell

@Larry Ayers I know of a site called Ceol Álainn, but I don’t remember seeing Campbell there. Is that the site you’re talking about?

Re: RIP Vincent Campbell

Im trying very hard to find mp3s of Vincent’s recordings, particularly his double CD. The donegal fiddle website hasn’t responded to emails and so far I haven’t been able to find the cd or files anywhere online. Does anyone have a copy of this or any of his stuff(aside from the brass fiddle) that they would be willing to send some mp3s?

Hoping to keep his legacy alive by better studying his repertoire and learning/passing along his versions of tunes!

Re: RIP Vincent Campbell

I have a spare copy of Vincent’s ‘The Purple Heather’. I’ve also a spare of Néillidh Boyle’s ‘A Feeling in the Blood’, if anyone’s interested. I would not be prepared to copy either of these into mp3 format.

Re. Larry Ayers’ comment above (‘Years ago I downloaded an LP, one of Vincent Campbell’s recordings.’). The only commercial album on which Vincent appeared was ‘The Brass Fiddle’. He did not make any solo LPs or CDs until ‘The Purple Heather’. It’s possible that Larry may have confused him with Vincent Griffin.
