A session is unpredictable by it’s nature!

A session is unpredictable by it’s nature!

It is; innit? What am I missing here?
People, their music, taste, room acoustics, sensory stimulus, blood sugar levels, dehydration, tuning, brain farts, singing, not-singing, closing time, furniture, banjos…

TVs (in the US)

Re: A session is unpredictable by it’s nature!

TV either is or it isn’t (predictable). Certainly a distraction in many bars and such. But it’s predictable in that
if an establishment has multiple screens they become part of the environment. Also it may be predictable
if you can have the sound turned off & find a spot where the screens are not facing session musicians.
I have played in places with a sequestered snug area where TVs are not present. Rare, but nice
when such spaces are available for music sessions.

Re: A session is unpredictable by it’s nature!

You can say the same about improv sessions… I went to one yesterday and they are never predictable.

Re: A session is unpredictable by it’s nature!

That is why it’s called *improv*?

Re: A session is unpredictable by it’s nature!

Yep exactly.

Re: A session is unpredictable by it’s nature!

I’m not getting why/how that relates to sessions which are not done with the goal of improv, which I assumed was apparent when I posted the OP. Obviously improv is unpredictable. Not all sessions are improv. Verdad?
What am I missing, Wanderer?

Great tossing around ideas, mates.

Re: A session is unpredictable by it’s nature!

My wife (love her to bits) laments that I am s-o-o-o unpredictable, so I’d certainly be in my choice realm.

"*Life* is unpredictable by it’s nature."

Absolutely, Gobby.

Re: A session is unpredictable by it’s nature!

Gobby, let’s just say I’m not surprised by the direction this thread didn’t take.
Happy Paddy Day! Yabadabadoo.

Absolutely?

Re: A session is unpredictable by it’s nature!

I always expect a session to be unpredictable, but I am occasionally surprised by how predictable it is.

Re: A session is unpredictable by it’s nature!

Personally, I like when something is unpredictable within a predictable framework. For example, it’s predictable that we’ll play reels at some point during the night, unless we explicitly say we won’t (and is it predictable that we’ll make that restriction)? But which reels we’ll play, we really don’t know. Unpredictable within a very specific framework.

Re: A session is unpredictable by it’s nature!

My wife left me ‘cos she said I was unpredictable.
So I turned into a bowling ball.

Re: A session is unpredictable by it’s nature!

Yes, a session is unpredictable by its nature.
And in my hands, Choons, so is a bowling ball! ;-)
