A theory about the name “The Galtee Mountain Rangers”

Hello! I was listening to one of my favorite tunes "The Galtee Mountain Rangers".

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yXqG2A-mTWw

I’ve also been researching the Irish War for Independence, and I noticed something "The Galtee Mountain Rangers" could be another name or a nickname for a flying column in the third Tipperary Brigade. Now I’m fully aware that this tune is also known as Callaghan’s reel and that this name predates the name "The Galtee Mountain Rangers" by quite some time. Is it possible this tune could have been sort of re-purposed to commemorate a specific flying column or perhaps even the whole of the Third Tipperary Brigade during the war?

You might be interested in reading this Kellie https://www.duchas.ie/en/cbes/4922060/4848588

A 1930s version of the Galtee Mountain Boys. If you read through a few pages, you’ll see that it relates to Fenian times and a chap called Condon born 1840 in Anglesboro. A tenants rights meeting was held in the Square at Mitchelstown on Friday, 9th Sepember 1887 to which people came in their thousands from miles around. Events got out of hand and resulted in what is since known as “ The Mitchelstown Massacre” when three men lost their lives, gunned down by the police.

So I wonder if the more common version recorded since and which you’ll find on youtube is just a rewrite of the lyrics of the ‘original’??

I’ve never seen a recording from a Sliabh Luachra musician where it was called the Galtee Mountain Rangers. Humours of Galtymore and the Galtee Rangers are names I’ve seen.

There’s a slide The Gallant Tipperary Boys https://thesession.org/tunes/4209 which is obviously very different from the OP.

I suspect the 1916 rebel song connected to this OP & title is a just a rewriting of the older Fenian ballad referenced above, which may be a rewrite of something else. And that somewhere along the lines, these ballads and their stories have become conflated with the reel title?
