Educate Me. Coleman/Morrison/ Killoran Stylistic Differences?

New to ITM. Working my way through Peter Cooper’s book and Matt Cranitch’s as an addendum. This lead me here to tons of tunes and recordings. Picked up "Michael Coleman 2 CD Set" and " From Ballymote to Brooklyn." I understand it’s "Sligo" style but what would a more experienced player see/hear as the differences amongst these players? What’s the inside scoop?

I also have Kevin Burke’s "Sweeny’s Dream" and think I can hear how Killoran influenced him at least in tune choices. "Sligo Maid" on "Dream" and "Ballymote" are very similar in execution.

An interesting question! Definitely a close stylistic grouping of Sligo masters. My general impression is that Coleman played a little faster and with more bounce, freer variations, and more profuse ornamentation than Killoran, with Morrison sort of in between. Lots of exceptions to all that, I’m sure.

I think of Coleman as more likely than the other two to throw in a G# in a D tune, as if more consciously following a harmonic/chordal structure through the tunes. That’s just an impression though and not backed by research—it might not stand up to real scrutiny. To my ear, Coleman played ever so slightly out of concert pitch more often, too. He really worked the f to f# area of the fingerboard, and points in between. Morrison and Killoran sound much more disciplined and consistent with their intonation—and maybe a little less wild and free because of it.

If you haven’t already visited it, you might be interested in this playlist at the Irish Traditional Music Archive (ITMA) site: "The Holy Trinity of Sligo Fiddle Masters" featuring recordings by Coleman, Morrison and Killoran:

While ago, I’ve watched very interesting videos on youtube channel Ocean Media
interviews with Seamie O’Dowd and Oising McDiarmada about Sligo style fiddle
they are explaining there the ornamentation and changes in the way tunes are played and written.
check it out, might help you

Thank you both for your replies. That ITMA was a site I was unfamiliar with. What a great resource. I will definitely look into that further. Padre, I had watched that video series before but will revisit it now that I’ve had more exposure to The Masters.
