Anyone want to name some tunes?

Anyone want to name some tunes?

Ive recently written a couple of new tunes, and am struggling for names, so I was wondering if anyone would like to name any of them. Any obscure/funny names are appreciated, but also any with a sweet story. Remember to share the story with us, and if wanted, specify which tune you want it for. Currently, the nameless tunes are,
2 D minor Strathspeys
1 Strathspey with a Bb first part, then G minor second
1 G Minor Reel
A D Minor 5/4, 4/4 odd time signature thing
A slow air in G minor
A minor jig that im not sure of the key of, has a scale of A, Bb, C#, D, E, F, G#, A
And a hornpipe in D major

I will be choosing names 1 week from now

Thanks, J

Re: Anyone want to name some tunes?

You should probably send a link to these tunes, kinda hard to name a tune you’ve never heard

Re: Anyone want to name some tunes?

Call them all ‘J#’s’, Paddy Fahy style, ‘to avoid confusion’ as the great man is reported saying.

Re: Anyone want to name some tunes?

As said above, kind of crucial to hear the tunes first. Your tune with the funky key is what I believe is A Double Harmonic.

Re: Anyone want to name some tunes?

Just give them numbers or letters. Names may or may not occur to you in the fullness of time.

If you are determined to label them, remember the old story about the Native American elder naming his tribe’s children.

Re: Anyone want to name some tunes?

Hmm, just checked in my "future tune names" file to see if there were any I was willing to share. Sorry, but nope. Apparently I need to start writing tunes faster!

Well, okay, you can have "Hang the Duck to Dry" if you want. I’ve got no idea why that’s on my list.

Re: Anyone want to name some tunes?

Oh no. I think the naming of tunes is completely tied up with the composition of tunes, every tune is connected to a person or event or place.
Sorry, no red headed orphans!

Re: Anyone want to name some tunes?

Oh, if only it were that simple, allan21. Sometimes tunes just appear with no apparent inspiration.

My compositions usually start with working titles like 190929 (I don’t generally come up with more than one tune in a day). Finding a title often takes more time than composing the tune. Indeed, only the best ever get proper titles.

Re: Anyone want to name some tunes?

Hey, you’ve nicked my title, DonaldK! Snorglephlim the Grud is already taken - I wrote that V minor reel in 2016. Is nothing sacred around here?!

Re: Anyone want to name some tunes?

I sat down for 2 minutes & came up w/20 names. Odds are at least 1 or 2 are good for some tune.
Jim came up w/3 good ones & he probably spent less time than I did & he’s probably more now.
Bullocks
The Vulcan Flute
Winter is Coming (throw that 1 out)
Charlie’s Fiddle (too cliche)
Humours of New Delhi
Trip to New Delhi
Delhi Strathspey
Deli Strathspey 2
Koala Island
The Flying Pig
The Floating Pig
The Pig that ate his Blanket
The blankety, blank, blank
Shooting blanks (stole the idea from Mason Williams)
Etcetera Strathspey
etc. Strathspey 2
Hang the Pig to Dry (Don’t know where that came from)
Rolling Pigs
Rolling in the Pigsty
Sheep on the Rock

Re: Anyone want to name some tunes?

Could probably come up with a few, after hearing the tunes.

Re: Anyone want to name some tunes?

will we ever hear these tunes? Jerry O’Donnell, no what IS the old story about the Native American tribal elder???

Re: Anyone want to name some tunes?

This thread is making me laugh tonight, but I encourage you to create your own names. That’s part of the fun! And then you’ll have names that mean something to you.
I once created made-up tune names when I was extremely bored waiting for an event to start. It only took about 3 minutes for me to do it. If you’re having trouble, just sit down and write what comes to your mind… then later you can decide what you’d like to keep.
I started a list of tunes relating to university life (as I am a student), but unless you are also a student they probably wouldn’t have any significance for you.

Re: Anyone want to name some tunes?

Come on, Christmas Eve, you and I both know that title comes from page 1 of "A First Book of Tunes for Vulcan Triple Armpit".

Re: Anyone want to name some tunes?

O’Carolan’s cappuccino
Click go the gears
The mellow yellow robin
The fox on the wing (Aussies will understand..)
The pile of bricks
Drowning in the creek
The traffic jam
The cockatoos do squawk

This is pretty easy..

Re: Anyone want to name some tunes?

AB - you forgot ‘The Cashier From Kashmir ’ :)

Re: Anyone want to name some tunes?

Well, here are some of mine, but as they are real titles to real compositions, you can’t have them!
The Alcossescocia Rumbar
The Battle of Branxton
Big Eastern Skies
Broadford Reel
Farewell to Berabhaigh
Flo Finds her Feet
Girvan Mazurka
Holy Corner Strathspey
Holy Corner Waltz

Miss Mackenzie of Musselburgh
Misty September
New Horizons

The Red Herring

The Venturefair Waltz

Re: Anyone want to name some tunes?

@AB, "The Flying Pig" is a lovely (and somewhat tricky) slide written by the band, Slide. (Great minds think alike, I guess) ;-)

Re: Anyone want to name some tunes?

Shhhh, DonaldK! No need to tell them everything…

Re: Anyone want to name some tunes?

Oh, I have vague memories of a rather drunk banjo player playing an unfamiliar tune, which he called "The Chickens of Kiev".

I reckon that’s a keeper!

Re: Anyone want to name some tunes?

loving the names so far, and also loving the band name maker. First name I got was manure of the bare foot fisherman, which might need to get used. I should have the tunes written out soon, just got 2 or 3 left, then thats me done

It sounds a bit haunted. Would be a good Halloween tune. Here’s a few ideas along that train of thought which may fit.

The Dead Are Rising, The Witch’s Potion, Witch And Her Broom, The Flying Witch, The Mummy, The Headless Horseman.

The first part also feels a bit serpentine to me. Snakes, Dragons, Eels, etc. may fit. First name that comes to mind is The Snake Charmer. Could go with something like The Kraken as well.

By the way, The B Part resembles the same kind of structure as Brother’s Jig.

Hard to choose between those 2 iconic versions! Not sure what JS would have thought!
