Manx Lullaby but not Manx Lullaby , looking for other thoughts

Manx Lullaby but not Manx Lullaby , looking for other thoughts

Good day. The following link is to a .pdf of a tune called Manx Lullaby :

however , all searches for a tune of that name come up with decidedly different pieces. To our ear , what we have is more akin to Eagle’s Whistle , but not perfectly so.

So , is “Manx Lullaby” just a common name for any number of tunes , and we just happen to have an odd one? Is it mis-named ? All thoughts appreciated.
Al

Hi Al,
I unfortunately can’t read music, but on Carol Walker’s album of Manx songs and tunes “Alas, The Horse is Gone” she has a song called “Washing Song” (translated to “Arrane Ni Nyee”), which strongly reminds me of “The Eagle’s Whistle.” Maybe that’s it?

I have a copies of both Carol Walker’s and Charles Guard’s collections of Manx songs and tunes. The tune you linked to is definitely not the Manx Lullaby, but rather the Washing Song that was mentioned by Whimbrel.

In the Manx Tradition it’s called Arrane ny Niee and it’s very similar (if not the same) to the Eagles Whistle. In David Speers book ‘Manx Traditional Music for Sessions’ there’s a list of tunes nicked from the Irish Tradition (probably by fisherman). Unfortunately some of them had forgotten the second part by the time they’d sailed home again!

I love that, wjh! It’s not like they could just text their friends back in Ireland or pull up a YouTube link.
