ABC software: integrated text editor/player/viewer for Mac Catalina

ABC software: integrated text editor/player/viewer for Mac Catalina

I am looking for an integrated text editor/player/viewer to go through Jack Campin’s tutorial on Scales and Modes in Scottish Traditional Music (http://www.campin.me.uk/Music/Modes/).

The idea is that I open a mixed text/tune abc file such as http://www.campin.me.uk/Music/Modes/Modes-hepta.abc and the software lets me see the text, view the dots and play the music for each of the contained tunes. As far as I understand, Jack Campin’s files were written for use in BarFly, a software no longer maintained and in any case not working on my Mac (Catalina).

EasyABC seems to do the job, however (as highlighted in a recent discussion) there are issue with Mac Catalina. Do you know of any other suitable software? Thanks.

Re: ABC software: integrated text editor/player/viewer for Mac Catalina

As I mentioned in the other thread, TuneBook is still working on Catalina, since it is 64 bit. You can save that file, and open it in Tunebook (by dragging it onto the list at the left), and it will display the tunes and let you play them. However, I am not sure it will display the accompanying text.

Thank you Reverend. I have indeed Tunebook on my Mac (I like it very much, especially the iPhone version, which has a very versatile player), however it seems there is no way of displaying the text together with the notated music.

Have you tried this one? https://www.nilsliberg.se/ksp/easyabc/

It works in Mojave - not tried it with Catalina yet.

It displays the abc and notated music ans also updates the notation in real time when the abc is edited

mazndofab: as the original question referenced, that’s the 32bit version that isn’t compatible with Catalina. There is a 64 bit beta version here - https://brsn.org.uk/easyabc/ - but it’s pretty flaky.

Re: ABC software: integrated text editor/player/viewer for Mac Catalina

I’m the developer of Tunebook. I had no idea that many people out there were using Tunebook for the Mac. It was just an experiment I did to port the iPad app to the Mac and see what happens. It’s been completely neglected for years apart from making sure it builds with the latest macOS. I don’t have time to develop it any further at the moment, but if anyone is interested in taking it on and improving it, just let me know. It’s a shame that there’s not much ABC software which runs on modern Macs.

Re: ABC software: integrated text editor/player/viewer for Mac Catalina

Hoi Sergio,

I gave it a try with Musescore using the ABC plugin. Everything looks complete to me.
Musescore is a freeware program and is compatible with Catalina. Big advantage with Musescore, you can edit and export it as PDF & Wav/MP3 etc. and its free, I use it a lot.

Re: ABC software: integrated text editor/player/viewer for Mac Catalina

Hi Jerry - as I said, I really like Tunebook: thanks for having made it available!

Hi John - thank you for your suggestion. I installed Musescore together with the ABC plugin. However, when I load my abc file (http://www.campin.me.uk/Music/Modes/Modes-hepta.abc) (I do this through Plugins -> ABC import in the top-bar menu), a single tune is loaded whereas I would like to see all the tunes contained in the abc file and also the text paragraphs therein contained.
