Mystery reel, mystery fiddler

Mystery reel, mystery fiddler

I’ve been watching a tape of "River Of Sound" , released in 1996. It seems that someone has put the whole thing up on "Youtube" :

https://youtu.be/5GP8f0p-gRo

There’s a young female fiddle player at approx. 1h 26m30s , playing a reel I’ve never heard before.
Can anyone tell me who she is, and what the tune is ?
Bit of a challenge, I think.
Thanks.

Re: Mystery reel, mystery fiddler

Could the tune be a variation of Saint Anne’s Reel?

Re: Mystery reel, mystery fiddler

It’s Maura Connolly from Offaly, All-Ireland champion in 1967.

Here’s the info from below the Youtube clip.

‘17 year old Maura Connolly from Edenderry, Offaly after winning the senior All-Ireland in Enniscorthy June 1967. Brendan Gaughran on Piano & Sean Norman giving moral & vocal support on her left-hand side.

‘Maura played with Sean Ryan’s Ceili Band in 1965 & 1966. In 1970 she was a founding member of The Bridge Ceili Band & won three All-Irelands with them in 1970, ‘73 & 74.

‘She was a member of The Glann Ceili Band from Edenderry in her under-age years & had her own ceili band in the early 1990’s which included John Lynch on banjo.

‘What a wonderful talent & a brilliant character. She now lives in Newbridge, Co. Kildare & is still playing great music.’

" a variation of Saint Anne’s Reel?"

I see where you get that - but if so, it’s come a heckuva long way from the original. No idea what it is, but I would wager it’s its own tune

Re: Mystery reel, mystery fiddler

Many thanks, GW. Never though to look there, I will admit.

Re: Mystery reel, mystery fiddler

From the comments below the link GW provided, the tune is "The Edenderry" from Sean Ryan’s "Hidden Ireland".
Here’s a more recent clip of Maura :

Re: Mystery reel, mystery fiddler

Maura spent a few years in London in the late sixties, where she played various sessions with a lot of the Fulham musicians. A great fiddle player, and a lovely character.

Re: Mystery reel, mystery fiddler

Indeed, she’s mentioned in Reg Hall’s doctoral thesis in the list of Irish musicians active in London during the years 1945-1970, but as Moira Connolly.

Re: Mystery reel, mystery fiddler

could anyone identify the Kerry polka played by Seamus Begley and Steve Cooney at about 8;48? It’s very familiar to me but I cant put a name to it.

Re: Mystery reel, mystery fiddler

thanks Jeff - I think its Sliabh Notes i heard it from rather than Jackie Daly

Re: Mystery reel, mystery fiddler

GW her name is Maura, she’s a friend.

Re: Mystery reel, mystery fiddler

Yep, I think Reg got it wrong.
