Play along with me

Play along with me

A question that has cropped up a lot recently (during the Lockdown era) in the Session Discussions is finding music to play along with. I have recently put up a website called ‘Attic Notes’ where I share my love of ITM.
https://www.atticnotes.me
One of the pages on the site is called ‘Play along with me’. Here I provide recordings of me playing 24 popular tunes—12 jigs and 12 reels. For example, the reels include, ‘The Sligo Maid’ and ‘The Maid behind the Bar’; the jigs include ‘Austin Barrett’ and ‘Tripping up the Stairs’. Above and to the right of each recording is a tempo control so that beginners can start off slow when learning a new tune and then turn up the tempo as they get better. I’ve also included the ‘dots’ for each tune. You might like to give it a go or pass the link on to someone who is starting out.

Re: Play along with me

I don’t know if this is technically possible but it would be great to have tunes to play along to that repeated indefinitely rather than running through once (or two or three times) then stopping. Is that something that can be done?

Re: Play along with me

That’s very useful. Thankyou.

Re: Play along with me

Very nice, chords even. I would like to see the abc notation for each tune as well.

Re: Play along with me

This is great; thank you Alan

Re: Play along with me

Interesting resource, good job. I was recently looking for something similar.
Will you expand the number of tunes in the future?

Re: Play along with me

Nice job!
The Teetallers is in fact Saint Anne’s reel, I think..

Re: Play along with me

Wonderful addition to my learning and playing along. And yes, Teetotaler is really St Anne’s Reel…a nice version! Thank you for all your info

Re: Play along with me

“Teetotaler is really St Anne’s Reel” -- ??

Sorry Alice, but you are mistaken. They are in fact two separate reels, in different keys.

Re: Play along with me

Yes, they are - the OP recorded St. Anne’s and mislabeled it.

Re: Play along with me

Many thanks for your website, a great resource.

Re: Play along with me

Thanks to the various people who were kind enough to comment on the ‘Play Along with Me’ page on my website, Notes from an Attic.
I have responded to your comments as follows.
1. Yes, ‘The Teetotaller’ should be ‘Saint Anne’s Reel’ and I have now corrected this.
2. In response to a request for the ABC versions, I’ve added these on the bottom ‘drawers’ of both the Reels and the Jigs music notation sections.
3. One person asked if I could ‘loop’ the tunes so that users can practice with the tunes on repeat. This would be an easy tweak and I’ve done it on one of the tunes (Sligo Maid) only. While I was at it, I’ve set this tune up so that it will start/stop when the user clicks away (i.e. anywhere on the screen). If you like these two features, I can easily use these settings for all 24 tunes.
4. Finally, I was asked if I had plans to do any more tunes like this. Well, yes I would be happy to do a few … within reason, obviously. Why not make some requests here on this discussion page and I’ll see what I can do!

Re: Play along with me

Many thanks, a really excellent innovative contribution

Re: Play along with me

Thanks for this! And an additional thank you for revising and adding based on requests. That’s very generous of you.

Thank you so much!

Re: Play along with me

Recently, I offered to add to the 24 tunes that I have already placed on the ‘Play Along with Me’ section of my website. Over the past week, several people have taken me up on my offer and put in some requests. The first request was for a reel called ‘Pigeon on the Gate’. In fact, I’d never learnt this popular reel so was pleased to be required to learn it as it is a cracking little tune. You can find my version of it (and hopefully, in due course, other requested tunes) in the section, “Requested Tunes during Lockdown”, which I’ve placed at the bottom of the page:

Re: Play along with me

I’ve just put up another requested tune—this one is the classic hornpipe, ‘The Boys of Bluehill’ — actually one of the first tunes I ever learnt, many years ago.
