bag of potatoes different tune to bag of spuds?

bag of potatoes different tune to bag of spuds?

This tune

is clearly different than

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_pkRcISJ9bM

however in the tunes section they have the second tune pegged for both named tunes.

I prefer the first tune. I know the second and find it quite uninteresting but the first seems more interesting to my mind.

So what is the story there? Are they both common session tunes and indeed distinct? In the big will harmon list of reels only bag of potatoes is listed iirc so not sure which one it is referring to since thesession thinks that the second tune is what goes by both names.

No to the first - depends where you are on the planet , yes to the second.

In one of Brendan Breathnach’s Ceol Rinnce na hÉireann collections he explains that the first tune was given to him with the same name as the better-known second one. So he took the liberty of distinguishing by adding the word "little" - The Little Bag of Spuds (although his name was in Irish).

Listen to this version by Skylark and see if you don’t agree with me that it’s really a cracking tune. (Although they don’t even get to the last note before the clip cuts out!)

Re: bag of potatoes different tune to bag of spuds?

My mate was playing in a session in the Irish Club in Leeds. He told them the names of tunes he was going to play in a set, one was The Bag of Spuds, and the other musicians said they didn’t know it, so he changed it for another tune. Half an hour later they played it in another set. He queried the name, they called it The Sack of Potatoes.

Ok, that clears it up then 🙂. I will skip that first one then. Thanks for the clarification.

What made me wonder is, as you can see from the recording, it is done as a learner video and they usually only pick common session tunes for those videos, but then as I searched for more videos of it I found hardly any.

I’m not sure I’ve played any of them in sessions (around here/there/anywhere), but that doesn’t mean that they’re uncommon someplace else. For what it’s worth, I (re-?)learned the one in G seven years ago, while I’ve known the second one in Am since the mid 1990s.

Of course they are distinct.
