The Paul Cranford “Cape Breton Heritage Series”

The Paul Cranford “Cape Breton Heritage Series”

Does anyone have the whole 9 book set?

Would you recommend?

I see he has the entire index available for free - so if the whole thing is overkill I’ll look through them and try to figure out what has the most strathspeys. I’m partial to strathspeys & reels, but I’ve never seen a CB book short on reels, so I’ll worry about the strathspeys.

I’ve got six or seven of them. They’ve all got lots of strathspeys in them. The tunes are organised by tonic, A through to G, in three sections: marches, strathspeys, reels, clogs and hornpipes are in the first, jigs in the second and slow airs and waltzes in the third.
I just happen to have Jerry Holland’s first book in front of me. Of the 282 tunes 36 are strathspeys.

A must have for lovers of C’Breton fiddle. The Jerry Holland Book at the very least.

Re: The Paul Cranford “Cape Breton Heritage Series”

I bought the complete set of nine volumes as a package. Even with postage to the U.K. I thought it was a pretty good deal, so having them sent to New York should cost a lot less. There’s a great deal of variation, from older Scottish “book tunes” to new compositions by people like Jerry Holland and Brenda Holland. You will recognise many tunes that you will have heard but probably haven’t played, but there are many others to discover. If you like Scottish/Cape Breton music I think this is a far better investment than many other offerings on the market.

Thank you. This will be my reward at the end of the semester if I stay on top of grading. 🙂

A wonderful collection and it keeps growing. Get the lot of them! You’ll have no regrets.
