Conal O Grada’s Top of Coom

Hi all,

Quick query - does anyone know if Conal O Grada’s ‘Top of Coom’ album is available for download (legitimately) anywhere? The only source I could find is his website, on CD.

Ironically, I just got the cd today, direct from Cúil Aodha! If you want/need a digital version, you could easily order the cd and burn it onto your computer. And you’d be supporting Conal himself as well. 🙂

That’s not necessarily true. I don’t have a computer with a CD drive. So if an album isn’t available digitally, I’m out of luck. That’s not an unusual situation either.

My laptop doesn’t have a CD drive either (doesn’t have much of anything - good old Apple) but I got myself an external DVD drive for about twenty quid so I could upload tracks from my CDs for transcription. I can also watch DVDs when we go on holiday (if they still exist - holidays that is).

There are 5 1/2 million of them for sale on eBay - only one of them “The Top Of Coom”, in the USA, for over £60.00 plus £10 P&P. !! Good luck with that sale - not.
If you don’t / won’t / can’t play CDs, then be prepared to miss out on a lot of music. Up to you.

“What’s a CD ?”

It’s a Compact Disc. They tend to come with packaging which gives information about what you are listening too. They also give much higher quality audio than comes with digital downloads or streaming, I believe. For people living in cities with 5G and super fast broadband then streaming might be what suits, but where I live there is 0G and not very fast narrowband so we still like our CDs. (Imagine a situation where living in a rural setting meant you only got 6A of electricity instead of 120A or 230A or whatever the standard is where you live.) I still have a telephone as well. They were used at one time for speaking to people remotely.

Mine was stolen by an associate, but they did leave the cover and notes behind. Last year I was given another copy and it revived my love and appreciation of the first time I heard it. More power to your elbow!

Jeremy, Loz: My apologies, right you are. I guess it’s one of the few perks of still having a 10 yr old Macbook, since it does have a cd drive. But it won’t last forever, that’s for sure. In any case, it’s a fantastic recording so I hope you (Loz) can get it one way or the other.
