Where to buy Irish musicians’ cd’s in USA?

Where to buy Irish musicians’ cd’s in USA?

Where do you folks living in the USA buy your cd’s? I am looking for an online source but also interested in any shops in New England/New York.

Thanks.

Re: Where to buy Irish musicians’ cd’s in USA?

Discogs marketplace, for used and OOP.

For new, or unavailable as used, I use distributor and record label websites, the websites of folk societies, and other similar places where the content creators are to be found. Sometimes, small retailers of musical instruments will have a few copies of local music for sale, and these are occasionally advertised on their websites.

What sort of music (artists/styles/locales), specifically, are you looking for and where have you looked?

Ossian USA is based in NH but of course, as an online biz, ships anywhere.

Out of curiosity, I did a search on Alibris for The Chieftains, which retrieved 71 titles.

I sometimes also check with brick n’ mortar stores I’m familar with in northern CA where I live, who also do mail order sales, like Amoeba and Streetlight records.

There’s also that nefarious site named after a certain river in South America, where I’ll look for used copies to support regular folks selling CDs and independent distributors.

@gravelwalks - thanks for the tip. didn’t know Discogs had a buy/sell site.

There’s generally no problem purchasing from Custy’s or the Coleman Centre in Ireland, and sometimes cheaper than for CDs already imported into the U.S. Better stock & fast delivery. I haven’t purchased from Claddagh Records since the physical store closure, but I have most of what I want that they currently supply.

Second the recommendation for Custy’s Music Shop. They have a great selection online and shipping to the USA is pretty quick.

Outside of buying direct from the shops or online shops of small businesses and the artists themselves, I’ll add for the OP, StephenB and anyone else that Discogs is a user supported website dedicated to cataloging and recording discographical details of all commercially published audio recordings. The site has a good forum for discussing many minute details of discographical import, and there is also a marketplace. I’m a collector and seller myself, I frequent record shows and have a huge collection. We all use and contribute to the Discogs site because it’s fantastic.

Bold:
The marketplace at Discogs contains thousands of sellers (myself included) and counted among them are the deep, deep stacks of some of the world’s largest retailers and private collectors. This is how you can find it for $175 on eBay, but $1.75 from Amoeba on Discogs. Moreover, huge brick and mortar houses like Amoeba or the Strand won’t put their entire collection on the shelf where it can be lost, damaged or stolen. But they will offer you that huge catalog online. I’ve found good luck in emailing private sellers whose listings claim to not ship overseas — a few words in a note and an agreement to pay extra for shipping usually does the trick.

There are quite a few Irish musicians who sell their stuff on Bandcamp - some only do digital downloads but others sell both CD’s and digital downloads. Bandcamp also does that thing every so often where on a Friday 100% of proceeds of the sale go directly to the artist.

AllCelticMusic from Glasgow - Scotland- has a good collection of traditional music cd’s:

Thanks to you all for your recommendations. I’ve purchased through Discogs. I did not know about Amoeba. Probably I should have specified an online shop specializing in Celtic music. I’ll look at Ossian and Custy’s.

Thanks again. Plenty now to keep me busy.

This importcds[dot]com place might be good. Haven’t tried them myself & don’t know how extensive their collection is, but worth a try. Here’s what came up when I searched their catalog for "Mary Bergin" (first name that popped into my head):

I know you asked about buying CDs but I have a Spotify subscription and there are a LOT of great classic Irish Trad albums available for streaming. I have been surprised by how many great albums they have.
