Galician Tunes for irish sessions? YT playlist

Hi there,
My name is Jean and I mostly play fiddle, banjo and mando (intermediate more or less) ;) . Like many other sessions we focus in our session on irish/scottish/canadian stuff. But why not include one or two tunes from Galicia? Due to family connections I got in touch with the rich galician culture and discovered some splendid tunes that are worth being included in a trad session.
Before taking off for Galicia I thought about recording some of these tunes while being there. Due to lack of space I wasnt able to take the fiddle etc. so I settled for a ukulele in fifths tuning. Quite challenging as its not keeping in tune that well but its ok and its a lot of fun.

So far I have been putting together 7 videos…to be continued till holidays are over ;)
Sorry for missing out on some triplets or tightness of rhythm… its mostly about having fun 🙂 and giving you an idea of Galicia and its rich musical heritage. Feel free to watch share and comment… cheers and graciñas, Jean

Re: Galician Tunes for irish sessions? YT playlist

I enjoyed that, thank you!

Re: Galician Tunes for irish sessions? YT playlist

Great stuff.
Just to say I’m also playing ukes in 5ths. Soprano in GDAE, Concert in CGDA, and baritone in EBF#C#
The tuning settles in. I find the concert in CGDA the most effective and best sounding.

My favourite stringed instrument lately. Light portable and inexpensive for decent instruments thanks to the uke craze.

I use mine all the time in the Autism services I work in. Perfect instrument for a quiet tune while supporting people. Can go on the train with me as I travel between services with no hassle.

Great stuff! I would very much like to hear more Galician music - do you have any recomendations for recordings of Galician music (old/new) as a good entry point into the tradition?

Re: Galician Tunes for irish sessions? YT playlist

Hi jamesa,

I’d say the most well known bands/musicians nowadays are:

Luar Na Lubre
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S8x-MAyYT1Y

Carlos Núñez
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DfLHRZtLtok

Milladoiro
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ox06b3o6HFM

Berrogüetto (disbanded in 2014)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7LdHzSGlPfk

and some younger folk/bands that I quite like:

Böj (band with some Irish/Scottish flavour)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2VtgaeqYJIw

Xabier Díaz (singer + Galician tambourine)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CwjZd5ak7xA

Tanxugueiras (they used to be very trad, their latest videos are more "modern")
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qjCeKRoGS8s

Caamaño & Ameixeiras (fiddle & accordion)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mlx72QDyZ08

Dequenvessendo

I’m sure I’m forgetting some, but hopefully that’s enough for now 🙂

Check out Riobo with Xose Liz and Begona Riobo

Re: Galician Tunes for irish sessions? YT playlist

Muchas gracias, DaveF, some amazing music there. Rectangular bodhrans? I’ve seen everything now!

Re: Galician Tunes for irish sessions? YT playlist

My pleasure! Those instruments are called "pandero cuadrado" (squared "pandero"). Common in certain areas of Spain, mainly the North West, and Portugal.

If you’re curious, this video explains a little bit about them. In Asturias (and I’m pretty sure Galicia) they’re played using your hands only. In a small village in Salamanca they use a stick. The video’s in Spanish but the auto-generated English subtitles are not totally terrible.

Re ‘Pandero Cuadrado’: In portugal, it is known by the name ‘adufe’, related to the Persian word, ‘daf’ (via Arabic ‘duf’). Square and rectangular frame drums of this type are played in many parts of North Africa.

Re: Galician Tunes for irish sessions? YT playlist

ah, related to the ‘daf’ - some amazing daf playing on last week’s bodhran discussion. Ref non- circular drums , I once saw a video of a Mongolian shaman playing a hexagonal one - or was it octagonal?

Re: Galician Tunes for irish sessions? YT playlist

Xabier Díaz was part of a concert at Celtic Connections this year - wonderful music.

Re: Galician Tunes for irish sessions? YT playlist

Thanks DaveF - look forward to checking all of these videos out!

Re: Galician Tunes for irish sessions? YT playlist

Great tunes and playing Jean. I spent a lot of time looking at ukes and strings - very tempting for travelling and for the tone the uke gives.

Re: Galician Tunes for irish sessions? YT playlist

At the Lark Camp in Mendocino, CA every summer we have a Galicia bagpipe class, Galician dancing class, and occasionally Galician accordion. There is a lot of music on the Lark website library.
As far as bands and musicians, check out
PABLO CARPINTERO: a top piper, researcher and builder of replicas of historical instruments. He has a huge and wondrous YouTube presence.
Also SUSANA SEIVANE,
OS CARUNCHOS,
PANCHO ALVAREZ (especially his cd, ‘ Florencio, O Cego Dos Vilares’ ) TREIXADURA,
And on YouTube one can look up the Galician TV program ALALÁ- which documents tradition bearers and has fabulous music.

Re: Galician Tunes for irish sessions? YT playlist

Hola chic@s !
Thx a million for all your kind replies and ideas! What an inspiration!
More bands that come to my mind are .. HABELAS HAINAS and LEILIA. But they mostly do vocal music. Tough to find tunes only bands except RIOBO or the pipers. Check out ANXO LORENZO and his album Tiran. Some blasting sets !

Interesting stuff regarding ukuleles in fifths tuning. Def gone try it on a concert Uke. Aquila have a special ukulele fifths string set. However the high e doesn’t last that long so I go for nylon charango strings to replace it. It’s ok but can take some time to set up. Thoughts on that more than welcome

Here is my number 8 , filmed in front of a typical Galician grain store.

Would you make up Galician only sets or pair them with Irish etc.?

Cheers and all the best
Jean

Re: Galician Tunes for irish sessions? YT playlist

Lovely altogether. I’m curious about your production — I’m assuming the rhythmic backup is overdubbed, but is the melody as well? You’re standing in the middle distance but the sound is right on the mic. Do you have a pickup? Love the ambient cricket noise and children’s voices too. Fantastic scenery as well!

Re: Galician Tunes for irish sessions? YT playlist

Hi there,
Yes the rhythm is overdubbed, recorded in the bathroom ;) . I use my ipad for the whole production and no additional mic. It seema very powerful so i dont need to overdub (unless the background is too noisy) . As far as software i use imovie. So mo tricks, all very basic. Could be bettt but its ok. Cheers!

Re: Galician Tunes for irish sessions? YT playlist

I love Galician Traditional Music! Thanks a lot for this discussion, you don’t see this very often in thesession. From time to time there are Galician tunes published here. I am always very motivated to do it. And of course I will always comply with the rule of publishing a few Irish tunes before publishing them. I listened to your tunes and they are wonderful! Keep it up!

Re: Galician Tunes for irish sessions? YT playlist

@fiddlejean:

Nice playing, nice tunes - thank you! 🙂

Re: Galician Tunes for irish sessions? YT playlist

There are two great Galician Muneiras on Andy May’s Happy Hours, so they’re making their way into the Northumbrian tradition now! (Muneira da Pontesampaio and Muneiras a Camposa)

Re: Galician Tunes for irish sessions? YT playlist

Hi Jean!

Very well played. I really enjoyed it. However, that is not a Galician tune and it’s not called Muñeira Carcarosa. Lúnasa, following their trend or misnaming tunes 🙂, named it like that on their album "La Núa", but it’s 100% incorrect.

This is a modern Asturian tune written by Asturian piper and accordionist Javier Tejedor and it’s called "Siete de Octubre" or "Siete D’Ochobre", in Asturian.

This is the tune as played by the composer (2nd in the set)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Z0y7v0yH2A

and this is the actual Asturian tune "Muñeira de Carcarosa" (Carcarosa is hamlet in the municipality of Mieres).
