Looking for a Cittern in Europe

Looking for a Cittern in Europe

Hey there!

I am looking for a Cittern (5x2 course) (24 ") around 1K? It can go up a bit more, but around that price would be good.

I am willing to buy second hand. I am based in Europe

Does anyone know where I can find one like this, or even if one has a used one for sale?

Thank you

Re: Looking for a Cittern in Europe

Hello!
If you can stretch to Roger’s prices, I thrououghly recommend Fylde Guitars - https://www.fyldeguitars.com/index.html
Based in Penrith in northern England but will supply worldwide. Roger Bucknall makes beautifully hand made instruments. I have a Mandolin and a Mandola of his. They are superb instruments.

Thread hijack incoming!
How would a five course cittern be tuned? No funny remarks about tuning pegs and machine heads, please!

Re: Looking for a Cittern in Europe

Thank you very much for your reply Jim. That is, however, a bit above my price range, but I appreciate your answer, and also recognize this man’s beautiful work.

Jimi. I am very new to this instrument also, but I would refer you to this thread:

Thanks!

Re: Looking for a Cittern in Europe

You could try Paul Evans (https://www.siveenmandolins.com/) who makes 10 string mandolins and is based in Ireland. Although it would be smaller than a cittern he might be worth chatting to. I think however his instruments would be outside your price range.

There are lots of different approaches - for melody players GDGDG and AEAEA seem to be common enough. CGDAD/DGDAD, that kind of thing. You could try fourths apart tunings as well, but might be a bit jangly for chord playing?

Re: Looking for a Cittern in Europe

Olá Joao,
If you’re looking for a good cittern for a little more than 1000€ on the continent, I recommend Valerio Gorla in Italy. Nice guy, great instrument maker, reasonable prices. I’ve got a good bouzouki from him for just 1K. He also makes citterns, mandolins, mandolas, etc.

The other makers I know in Belgium, France and Germany would charge (much) more than 1K.
Boa sorte !

There is a Fylde Octavius Cittern for sale for 750 pounds on The Irish Bouzouki (group name Facebook on Facebook).
