Name without a tune?

Name without a tune?

Does anybody have any pointers to a reel called ‘The Fess’
I can’t find it on this site or Google generally

Re: Name without a tune?

It starts off as a cousin to Tommy Coen’s Memories / Crosses of Annagh but continues on its own, and to my ears it sounds most like The Corn Stack:

Re: Name without a tune?

Thanks Jeff! A great ear you have. A friend of mine has transcribed it and it is very like The corn stack, with a few notes differing here and there.

Re: The Fess Reel?

It would help to know more about where you’ve encountered the tune. Heard it in a session where? On an album? In the realm of Irish or Scottish trad? Or some other genre?

There are a couple of reels with “Fèis” in the title. Perhaps the pronunciation wasn’t clear?

The Rector at the Fèis: https://thesession.org/tunes/5844
Punch In The Fèis: https://thesession.org/tunes/18648

A bit more of a stretch is Fleshmarket Close: https://thesession.org/tunes/6184

Or maybe you mean this one? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KCdKBHdPz30

Re: Name without a tune?

Many thanks for the pointer to the Orange Session book - which I have a copy of and behold here is the tune I was looking for:
X:1
T:Fess Reel
S:Orange session tune book. No.9.3, p.17
M:4/4
R:Reel
K:G
EF |:G2 BG DGBG | ABcA BGGB | A3 B cBAG | EGAG FDEF |
G2 BG DGBd | cBAB cdef | gfdB c2 Bc |1 dBcA BGAF :|2 dBcA BGBd ||
|: g2 bg dgbg | gbag fdde | f2 af dfaf | gbag fdef |
g3 ga af | gbag fdef | gfdB c2 Bc |1 dBcA BGBd :|2 dBcA BG G2 ||

I still can’t find it on this site - wondering of it has other name(s) or variants?

It was recommended to me by a friend and usually from the name I can track down a recording/entry on The Session. The Orange book has it in a set as follows:
Round the World for Sport
Flowers of Edinburgh
Fess Reel
Fergal O’Gara

Re: Name without a tune?

Sheehan’s: Thanks for clearing that up - if it is sufficiently different we could add the ‘Fess’ version as another setting to Sheehan’s - can certainly add it as an alternative name - the Orange book tunes were selected by Brid Cranitch published 2003 by Ossian

Re: Name without a tune?

It’s not even “another setting” - it’s pretty much identical to what I’ve played for the last +30 years.

But you haven’t submitted what you’ve played for the past +30 years as a setting, so it would be another setting in addition to the ones already posted here:

Fancy adding what you’ve played for the last +30 years?

Re: Name without a tune?

It has now been posted. Maybe not _identical_, but similar enough.
