Album Recommendations: The most edge-of-your-seat rockin’, flying through the air with abandon playing

I’m curious to hear some album recommendations.

Specifically ones that have a really heavy pulse that make you feel as if you’re flying through the air on some new fangled air surf board, but you’re flying through NY, can barely hang on, and it’s randomly cloudy, maybe even a light drizzle.

One constraint (outside of it being traditional): only one album recommendation per person!

Bonus points if it’s live.

I’ll start with my turn and recommend Irelande with Arty McGlynn, Frankie Gavin and Adam Coffey. It’s live from France, and I really enjoy the audience energy as part of the feeling.

Oh, that would be ‘Fiddlesticks’ recorded live at UCC in 1991. Ciaran Tourish, Dermot McLaughlin, Tommy Peoples, Proinsias O Maonaigh, Mairead Ni Mhaonaigh, Liz Doherty, Paula Doohan, Seamus Gibson, Seamus Glackin, Kevin Glackin,, and more… just insane energy and superb fiddling!

Just one? There’s no such thing. But for tonight I’ll say…

I like most of the live albums from most trad musicians, and you can search them in the recordings database here by typing “live” in the search box:

Dervish did a ripping fun session-format video, The Midsummer Night’s Session, in 2004. It’s on YouTube in two parts:

Not sure I like “edge-of-your-seat rockin’, flying through the air with abandon playing” anymore. But in order to play the game my vote is Ego Trip by MacDara O’Raghallaigh

Re: Album Recommendations: The most edge-of-your-seat rockin’, flying through the air with abandon playing

Any hints on where to find Gort Tape 1 and 2?

I actually have asked this because I rarely listen to this type of traditional music. Most of what I listen to is from Sliabh Luachra or Clare, neither which emphasize the rip-roarin’ aspects of the tradition.

I mean, clearly I gCnoc na Graí, Noel Hill & Tony MacMahon.

If you’re specifically looking for good live trad, then maybe the Geantrai album, which is a compilation of live music played on the TV program. https://thesession.org/recordings/2267

Well this would have to be “The Rainey’s”, a CD by the Rainey brothers, recorded live in Freeney’ Pub in Letterfrack, Connemare, 1956. Must be the wildest fiddle Irish traditional playing ever recorded.

I have never hard of The Raineys but neither have I enjoyed a new discovery as much in a long while. Mind blown. Don’t even know what they were doing. Was it one playing the tune and one playing rhythm? If you told me they were from Louisiana I would have been less surprised.

Whoa. I’m now trying to find this whole album! Lmk if anyone looking for it finds it outside of YouTube.

Re: Album Recommendations: The most edge-of-your-seat rockin’, flying through the air with abandon playing

The Celtic Grooves site has been defunct for some years (the first album on its new releases page came out in 2003!). I don’t know why PV doesn’t take it down.

Discogs has a couple for sale - https://www.discogs.com/sell/release/20942824?ev=rb.
