First time adding a tune (ABC notation)

First time adding a tune (ABC notation)

Hi everyone,

I took a shot at adding a tune to the session today…The Top of Ben Lomond. It is my first time adding a tune here and writing ABC notation.

https://thesession.org/tunes/22412

I was wondering how to change the notation to make appear larger on the page so that it is easily printed out and read? Any other suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

Click on PRINT.

Oh and you could put a return in the abc after the fourth bar of each line.

Re: First time adding a tune (ABC notation)

Thanks, looks better now!

Re: First time adding a tune (ABC notation)

You’ve put the return at the end of the fifth bar. Standard practice (though by no means universal) is to have four bars per line.

Not on the page, but if you zoom in or out the music will scale with the page. In theory you could also apply the %%scale directives but I would only do that if it was needed for everybody, and Jeremy would probably still disagree anyway :D

Very nice tune. Thanks for posting!

Re: First time adding a tune (ABC notation)

I’m with DonaldK on recommending four bars per line - it helps line up similar/identical phrases on successive sections so the patterns are easier to follow - of course every now and then a tune will come along with an unusual structure but generally bunches of 4 works well, I find.

In terms of size/legibility - depends how you are wanting to use it but I often take the ABC to the wonderful (free) online tool at https://www.mandolintab.net/abcconverter.php to generate a pdf which can then be printed or screen captured and so on

Re: First time adding a tune (ABC notation)

If you use EastABC you can write, play and save an .abc file and you can export all sorts of formats including .pdf .mid .wav and .xlm. There is a zoom facility that allows you to increase the size of the score on screen although it may not change how it looks on other sites.

EasyABC is free and available, I think, for all platforms. I use it on Linux and I know it works on Windows. I’m pretty sue it works on Mac too.
