seeking 5 string octave violin strings

seeking 5 string octave violin strings

Hi,I’m new to The Session, please forgive me possibly raising a tired subject - I’m interested in trying octave strings on a viola and am wondering if anyone can suggest a manufacturer (other than SuperSensitive). So far, from web searching it appears my best bet may be octave 5 string violin sets (although I’m concerned about string length). Thanks in advance for any thoughts..

Re: seeking 5 string octave violin strings

I have a 4 string octave fiddle and a 5 string fiddle. As Tim Phillips made the fiddles, I usually get strings through him. If you Email him through his website, he can probably advise you on availability, lengths etc

Re: seeking 5 string octave violin strings

What exactly is an octave fiddle? Or what do the strings do? Is it pretty much like… a Viola but on a violin, cello on viola, and so on? If so…

That’s so sexy, I must try -_-

Re: seeking 5 string octave violin strings

An octave fiddle is just marginally bigger than an ordinary fiddle with the same tunings as an ordinary fiddle but they sound an octave lower - it gives a gorgeous sound like a cello. Great for slow airs and accompanying.

hm. interesting. my f iddle is large for a fiddle, and has a great solid sound. should I try octave strings on it?
