Is this a version of The Morning Dew?

Is this a version of The Morning Dew?

Years ago in 2004, I had the amazing opportunity to go to Ennis and take part in the first Meitheal Summer Program for a week. Here’s a video of one of our classes playing a tune but I cannot remember the name of it, but it seems to me that it’s a version of The Morning Dew, but possibly with only an A and B part. Thoughts?

Re: Is this a version of The Morning Dew?

Yes, it’s a pretty standard version of the Morning Dew, with the usual three parts. The first part you hear clearly on the recording is the second part. If you see what I mean. 🙂

Here it is https://thesession.org/tunes/69

A couple interesting things about that tune

1) though the parts are usually is the same order, which part is reckoned “the first part” can vary.

2) there’s a scalar-run bit which can function as the second ending of the 3rd part (as most often reckoned) or it can be filled out to create an entire scalar-run part which can either replace the 3rd part or form a 4th part in addtion to a non-scalar 3rd part.

Confused yet? Just wait for it, in some sessions, where you’ll hear people playing three different things in the 3rd part, and for additional fun, those who add a 4th part come back to the 1st part one part too late.

Thanks!

Stiamh- I have struggled to clearly grasp that third part.
Richard D Cook- Yes, just a tad but I certainly get what you’re saying. I’m actually in this video as one of the flute players and was attempting to play along and I had a handful of the skeleton frame notes down, but I just did not know the name for sure. John Doyle has a version of this tune and (as a guitar player also) I’ve been working on how to play it well for a while. Way back when I was over there, I was still quite new to playing the flute and was doing all I could to keep up. I had intended to go back and learn it properly (and have made great strides since yesterday already lol) but had totally forgotten about it until I was watching this for old memories. This particular class was all about interacting with other instruments and led by Kieran Hanrahan. It was all great fun.
Thanks again

There’s also a Joe Cooleys Morning Dew that is a 2 parter played on Caitlín Nic Gabhann on her debut CD. https://thesession.org/tunes/9828

Not the one from your video, but interesting none the less.
