Cottesloe Beach, Seven of Eight & Mare Nostrum guitar chords
Hi Can anyone tell me where I can find the guitar chords for the above 3 tunes as they appear on the Session? (not a guitarist or music theory expert)….. Thanks…
Hi Can anyone tell me where I can find the guitar chords for the above 3 tunes as they appear on the Session? (not a guitarist or music theory expert)….. Thanks…
Some rhythmically tricky tunes there! Are you asking for a guitarist friend, and if so, how comfortable are they with odd time signatures? The chords are the easy bit compared to the rhythmic patterns! In any case, I’ll give it a whirl.
Chords played change each time through a tune. For example, in Cottesloe Beach on Wired, the first time through the recording, the guitar hangs on an A chord for nearly the whole tune. A and G chords are the fundamental bits of that tune, but the rhythmic punctuation is the complicated part.
The other two you suggested are more straightforward…pretty much following a bassline with a bar-by-bar movement, but with strumming matching the time signatures. Someone who’s a more accomplished chord player could come up with some more complete voicings, I’m going pretty basic here from what I hear.

Many thanks….Yes they are for a guitarist friend. He chose Waterman’s and worked out the chords for himself. I selected those above as thought they might appeal to him. Your notes are very welcome and I will pass them on. I love these rhythms. THANKYOU !!!!
As a result of Ben’s transcriptions, I’ve added support for 5/4, 5/8, 7/4, and 7/8 meters to my ABC Tools to support these tunes since I had few examples of tunes in these meters with chords.
Here’s are the two tunes in my ABC Tools as Ben transcribed them:
7 of 8
https://tinyurl.com/2dervxnp
Mare Nostrum
https://tinyurl.com/32r5twvb
5/4 and 5/8 have the follow bass/chord patterns:
‘boom’, ‘chick’, ‘chick’, ‘boom2’, ‘chick’
7/4 has the following bass/chord pattern:
‘boom’, ‘chick’, ‘boom2’, ‘chick’, ‘boom2’, ‘chick’, ‘chick’
and 7/8 has the following bass/chord pattern:
‘boom’, ‘chick’, ‘chick’, ‘boom2’, ‘chick’, ‘boom2’, ‘chick’
Where ‘boom’ is the primary bass note, ‘chick’ is the chord, and ‘boom2’ is a slightly less loud bass note.
If you are working on tunes in 7, you can choose between the 7/4 and 7/8 patterns, then modify your L: and Q: tags accordingly to get the speed you want.
Could you add. 10/8 boom ch ch boom ch ch bm ch bm ch ? That would complete this pipe tune

Great job by the way Ben
. Micheal , every time i try to access the user guide it crashes my browser , Brave on iphone .
Will, just use Safari.
Third party browsers are all just wrappers on the limited Safari webview anyway, there are no true third party browsers on iOS.
Will, regarding 10/8 support, easy enough to do if I have a good example to test against.
Do you have an example of a 10/8 tune with chords? I could just stick in some arbitrary chords, but would prefer a real example.
Ok thanks Michael . Appreciated
I was just working on that 10/8 tune and chords but at present its hard to do as playback is chaos

So no chords yet ! Hey Ben !! Wanna do the chords to this one too🙂 you did such a great job with the medina!!
OK, one sec, let me add the pattern. I’ll let you know when it is live…
OK, it’s live. Here’s a link to what you sent as far as some chords:
https://tinyurl.com/yc6abjzd
But, be aware, abcjs restarts the pattern for the meter I think on each chord change. So the mid-measure chord change pattern probably won’t be to your liking. If you let it run full measures, the pattern you specified will heard.
Also, for the love of all things, can we please convince Jeremy to get rid of the freaking “Smart Quotes” in forum posts that mess up pretty much every ABC renderer. I have to manually replace them every time I copy an ABC out of a post. The ABC database doesn’t have them.
wow that was quick! great stuff !thanks a load. ill get on it now.cheers
Thats loads better but i think i had the feel wrong
rather than Bcc Bcc Bc Bc
its Bcc Bcc B-c-
Anyhow. its a massive improvement! and lets me get ideas as to how the chords might work. thank a lot. cheers
Will, on the sustained full chord measures, it’s definitely:
“10/8”: [‘boom’, ‘chick’, ‘chick’, ‘boom2’, ‘chick’, ‘chick’, ‘boom2’, ‘chick’, ‘boom2’, ‘chick’]
Like I said, if you have chord changes in the middle of a measure, then the pattern will restart with the chord change.
If you listen to the second line, where it’s just playing the last chord, the pattern is as requested.
I can’t change the inter-measure pattern use, but if you want a different base pattern, just let me know, easy to change. I could, if you’re interested, like I did for 7/8, offer an alternative pattern using 10/4 as the meter that would require some fiddling with L: and Q: tags to get the right speed.
Oh, I get what you’re asking for now… one sec…
OK, changed the 10/8 style to:
“10/8”: [‘boom’, ‘chick’, ‘chick’, ‘boom2’, ‘chick’, ‘chick’, ‘boom2’, ‘’, ‘chick’, ‘’],
Also added the previous style you first requested as a 10/4 option:
“10/4”: [‘boom’, ‘chick’, ‘chick’, ‘boom2’, ‘chick’, ‘chick’, ‘boom2’, ‘chick’, ‘boom2’, ‘chick’]
which you can use if you’re willing to do the following (effectively doubles the note lengths, but uses the alternate pattern):

I use the 10/4 setting on piano both voices and it sounds about right . Cheers
Also added 2/8 (boom, chick) and 3/8 (boom, chick, chick) backing patterns for those who want to create their own subdivided 10/8, 7/8, or anything/8 patterns with different pulses from the defaults. In ABC you can embed meter changes inline by wrapping them in square brackets, for example: [M:2/8], [M:3/8], or [M:10/8].
So that makes this possible (only first line done as a split meter, then goes into the default 10/8 pattern requested):

Thats great ! Cheers i use these odd time sigs a lot in my own tunes so well handy . Plus just getting a click in these meters is great ! I just used the Taiko drum for both voices!! Works a treat!! Awesome
Cool, glad it’s working for you!
Not sure about the 10/4 though ! I cant quite figure out whats happening .
10/8 mute melody , taiko for the chords works right but the 10/4 ……
with the melody on Taiko as well they both sounds great .
Im inspired to see what can be done with these 2 voices just with percussion!!
🙂
If you use 10/4 change the L: to L: 1/4 and then work with everything in effectively double time.
You’ll might have to set the tempo by adding a Q:100 or something to get the tempo right.
It won’t work with the 2/3 and 3/8 inter-line rhythms, the 10/4 is really there for someone who wants that specific 10-beat
[‘boom’, ‘chick’, ‘chick’, ‘boom2’, ‘chick’, ‘chick’, ‘boom2’, ‘chick’, ‘boom2’, ‘chick’]
pattern and not micro-managing the meters.
Here’s an example using your tune:
http://michaeleskin.com/abctools/abctools.html?lzw=BoLgjAUAKiUBYFMAEUEDsAuckAUCWADggE4QAy4A9ACwQCy4ADDRANIgCCAtngB4QAfASABEHEUgDGAPgBCHJCIDiIgCaTZi8QklIEAQwGKAolxEBzaQDNkIgCIibqrSJ2KVssWIGDLNpE56AEwcQUYy8kjySkihoUKCEbrqzghB+mF+yIEIADy6srkcAlkBCKkhYVJyCtGxlQlCIPrS5lZIbcgcujoCqtIaUpFKmqqyJdbZ5VKpkgItbR1WFfUgjcIcA12SyOZBHfsCmzuxJxlIGUdbp7v7e-Ot7W0roWsCQA&format=noten&ssp=10&pdf=one&pn=none&fp=yes&name=The_Tenth_Piper_Split_Meter&play=1
Maybe in the future I’ll come up with a custom ABC annotation in my tool for selecting the backup boom/chick pattern in the ABC itself. Currently no way to do that in abcjs.
Ok gottya . Thats a great tool Michael
Cheers
You may now customize the backup rhythm used for any meter in a single tune with chords by adding the following comment-based directive anywhere in the tune’s ABC:
%abcjs_boomchick meter rhythm_pattern_string partial_measure_threshold
This is particularly useful for meters that may have multiple commomly played subdivision groupings like 7/8 and 10/8.
Valid rhythm_pattern_string characters are:
B - Boom, b - Alternate Boom, c - Chick, and x - Silence.
Examples:
%abcjs_boomchick 5/4 Bxcbc 2
%abcjs_boomchick 5/8 Bxxbx 2
%abcjs_boomchick 7/8 Bccbxbx 3
%abcjs_boomchick 10/8 Bccbccbxbx 5
The number of characters in the pattern_string must match the meter numerator.
partial_measure_threshold sets how many beats must be present in a partial measure in the ABC to use the custom pattern.
partial_measure_threshold is optional and if not included, defaults to half of the meter
numerator rounded down to the next lowest integer (minimum is 1).
If you have an incorrectly formatted %abcjs_boomchick directive in a tune, you will be alerted when trying to play the tune.
You may have multiple custom rhythm directives for different meters in a single tune.
If you have the same meter specified twice in custom rhythm directives in a tune, only the first one will be used.
This directive is specific to this tool and will not work with other ABC players. Here are a couple of demos showing the new directive being used for 7/8, 5/4, and 5/8 rhythm patterns:
7/8:
https://tinyurl.com/y3xepvfr
5/4 and 5/8:
https://tinyurl.com/35xfk7sr
For the tune in 10/8 here’s how I suggest dealing with it now, first part shows using a split meter, after that it’s using the custom 10/8 pattern: %abcjs_boomchick 10/8 Bccbccbxbx
http://michaeleskin.com/abctools/abctools.html?lzw=BoLgjAUAKiUBYFMAEUEDsAuckAUCWADggE4QAy4A9ABwQCy4ADDRANIgCCAtngB4QBSQQEMARgGMAVgGcA+qID2CruLh5xAayRhm1JACFx4icd6j+QgD6WQAbQYBmGgF0ARB1dJxAPn0ckrgDirgAm4vpIlvYgAEwu7q4I4gEeCMKWSNFO1G4AolyuAObeAGbIrgAirmUhkdFxOQlJAcH6CRyWEFEMOi7FZUg1SAgxHDEZPn4GHIFIY2PWXZPJYbUjwuP9yEMIADzJ+rsdW4MIa6PjXr7+frPz453WIMLehSVIb8gcyUmWId7hLxTQIREL6SwnIbiNbiSwvN4fErnOYxECLJ4cAFfcTIQoxD74yyYnFzEkbJAbIlY0m4-F4uGvd5vZFjNGWIA&format=noten&ssp=10&pdf=one&pn=none&fp=yes&name=The_Tenth_Piper_Split_Meter&play=1

You can only set one custom pattern per meter.
I wrote this:
“If you have the same meter specified twice in custom rhythm directives in a tune, only the first one will be used.”
Only that first one will apply, there’s no way to change it “on the fly”
You can’t change the custom meter solution in the middle of the tune.
Unfortunately it’s a limitation of abcjs’s handling of rhythms. It has a fixed table of meter to rhythm solutions that it uses to do the rhythm generation, and that table is fixed and has to be in place before the playback solution is done. There is no way in the middle of it’s generating the rhythm track to swap in a new custom solution.
You can change meters on-the-fly but not custom meter rhythm solutions.
Ok gottya! Awesome ! Your on a roll as they say!!
Hope it’s at least somewhat useful!
Works well .“ Smart” though means i cant just paste it into your app
But if as I just did ,I added a setting https://thesession.org/tunes/23366#setting48241
from your page then copied the ABC from https://thesession.org/tunes/23366#setting48241 back into your app and works!

But this doesnt transfer over( due to smart quotes) from the discussion section .
I freaking hate the SmartQuotes. I may just have to strip them myself in the tool if someone pastes ABC into the tool. I think I’ll add that.
There. Fixed.
Tool now fixes “smart quotes” on file open, file add, and paste.
Turns out the “Smart Quote”fix also fixes some other issues with them from other sources, like Microsoft Word.
“There. Fixed.” Brilliant thanks.
I’m a bit surprised other tools haven’t built that in by now.
Thats fast work there !! Im stoked with the new rhythm feature .
