Info on guitar sought…

My wife’s aunt (who is 79 and in ill health) gave me a guitar that was given to her 40 years ago — she said it was played by Sal Salvadore when he was with the Stan Canton band. It is a Gretsch Pro 21, in pretty decent condition.

Anyone know anything about this instrument or its ilk?

TIA,

Eliot

Probably the best known dealer of vintage guitars, offers online appraisals, probably for a fee:

Re: Info on guitar sought…

Wow, thanks for the help. I contacted Mr. Gruhn who said the same thing about the instrument — it could be worth a lot. I will continue to try and evaluate the instrument … in the mean time, it is best if I stop playing it 😎

I want to find a photo of Salvadore playing this guitar, that would be the clincher. Any idea who might have such an archive of photos?

Maybe I need to find a jazz website to post this on… any ideas about that?

Thanks again,

Re: Info on guitar sought…

You’ve probably found these pictures ion the same site I pointed you to earlier: http://www.classicjazzguitar.com/artists/artist_picture_page.jsp?artist=28

Any of those guitars look like yours? If yours was the one he was playing in Stan Kenton’s band, then you probably need a photo of him around 1952-53, which I think was when he was with them. But that’s not to say he didn’t own the guitar before then or afterwards, so it’s worth checking any photos you can find on the net, regardless of the date.

You could try contacting the University of North Texas Music Library. From this link, you’ll see that they have a number of pictures of Sal in the recording studio with Stan Kenton: http://www.library.unt.edu/music/kenton/Cap40s.htm
I can’t work out if you can access these online, but if not, perhaps they would let you take a look - maybe they could send scans or something.

You could also try checking some of his record sleeves - you’ll find a bunch of them here if you click on the links to the recordings: http://www.guylj.fsnet.co.uk/JazzGuitarists/SalSalvador/

Good luck - let me know how you get on!
